FH: Hofstra Falls At JMU; Will Face Delaware In CAA Semifinals Friday

Harrisonburg, VA – The 17th-ranked Dukes of James Madison scored six goals in the first 23 minutes, including three by senior Adrienne le Vatte, on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Hofstra Pride in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season finale for both teams at the JMU Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon.

The contest was for the CAA regular season title, the number one seed and the right to host the four-team. CAA Field Hockey Championship on Friday and Sunday, November 6 and 8. JMU (13-5, 6-0) gets the regular season title and the top seed while Hofstra, which saw its four-game winning streak stopped, is now 14-5 and 4-2 in the CAA.

The Pride, who finished in a three-way tie for second with Delaware (14-5, 4-2) and Drexel (8-10, 4-2), will be the third-seed in the CAA Championship and will face the Blue Hens on Friday in the CAA semifinals at 5:45 p.m.. JMU will square off against Drexel in the first semifinal at 3 p.m..
                                                           
In Sunday's contest, the Dukes left little mystery in the outcome jumping out to a big lead. Le Vatte opened the scoring 3:10 in off a rebound. Senior Taylor West scored her 14th of the season four minutes later, off a penalty stroke, for a 2-0 lead. Le Vatte notched her second of the game at the 16:24 mark by deflecting senior Loes Stijntjes' shot from the corner. Just 1:03 later Danni Wilson scored her fourth of the year from freshman Melissa Wilken for a 4-0 advantage. Wilken would also assist on the next goal by freshman Miranda Rigg, her seventh of the year, at the 19:53 mark. Le Vatte would complete her "hat-trick" almost three minutes later for her fourth goal of the season as the Dukes held the 6-0 lead at the halftime break.

Hofstra was outshot in the first half, 15-6 forcing sophomore goalie Lauren Saltus (6 saves) to make five saves and defensive saves by red-shirt freshman Taylor Mumley and senior Leigh Maxwell-Smith.

Hofstra got on the board 10:23 into the second half when junior Claudia Marin Samper picked up a long pass down the field and ran into the circle for a 1v1 with the JMU sophomore goalie Sara Kraeutler (3 saves). Marin Samper converted her 19th goal of the season to break the shutout.

The Dukes would add goals by Stijntjes and West, her second of the game, to close out the scoring. JMU outshot the Pride, 21-9 and had six penalty corners to Hofstra's four in the contest.
