Harrisonburg, VA- Esmee Peet and Meghan Winesett each scored twice in the first half and Kayla Devlin added three assists to lead the second-seed Blue Hens of Delaware (15-5) to an 8-1 victory over the third-seed Hofstra Pride in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship semifinal at the James Madison University Field Hockey Complex Friday night.
The Pride end their season with a 14-6 record, the second best mark in school history behind a 15-4 mark in 1987. The Blue Hens of Delaware advance to the CAA Championship game against the top seed Dukes of James Madison. The Dukes posted a 3-0 victory over fourth-seed Drexel in Friday's first semifinal.
Delaware did a stellar job of stopping the Pride attack, holding the Hofstra forwards to just five shots and shutting down CAA leading scorer and All-CAA first team selection, junior
Claudia Marin Samper, who ended her season with 19 goals and 16 assists for 54 points.
Hofstra recorded its only goal of the game at the 20:05 mark when sophomore
Simca Schoen fired a bullet from the top of the circle that her sister, junior
Stella Schoen tipped past UD goalie Emmeline Oltmans. It was the 17th goal of the year for the All-CAA first team selection this season.
But at that point, the goal cut the Hofstra deficit to 2-1 as Delaware had previously scored twice-both by Winesett off of rebounds-in a 31-second span. After the Pride goal, Peet scored her 12th and 13th goals of the year off of penalty corners to give the Blue Hens a 4-1 advantage at halftime. UD outshot Hofstra, 9-1 in the first half with Pride sophomore goalie making five saves in the first 35 minutes before being replaced at halftime by classmate
Carys Swan (3 saves).
Four different Blue Hens, Marjelle Scheffers, Greta Nauck, Jacki Coveleski and Michaela Patzner, scored in the second half to lead the Blue Hens to the CAA final. Hofstra was outshot in the contest 17-8 and UD held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
All-CAA second team selection, senior
Charlotte Loehr, who started all 78 games during her career, and sophomore
Simca Schoen, who had career-highs of 12 goals and 32 points in 2015, were designated for the CAA Championship All-Tournament team.
