Stella Schoen and
Carissa Witmer scored Pride goals but Blue Hens junior Esmee Peet posted two goals and senior Allie Mikelson added two assists to lead 13th-ranked Delaware to a 4-2 victory over Hofstra at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
The UD victory snapped Hofstra's eight-game winning streak as the Pride record now stands at 10-4 overall and 0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware, which won for the second straight time, improved to 11-2 on the year and 2-1 in the CAA.
The Blue Hens tallied the lone goal of the first half and three in the second 35 minutes to post the victory. Peet opened the scoring just 6:57 into the contest, off a penalty corner, with Mikelson and junior Meghan Winesett assisting. Hofstra outshot UD, 7-4 in the first half with sophomore goalie Emmeline Oltmans making three of her five saves and senior Janell Holmes making a defensive save in the first half.
Delaware boosted the lead to 2-0 just 2:45 into the second half as freshman Greta Nauck tallied her fifth goal of the year off a rebound in front of Hofstra sophomore goalie
Carys Swan (6 saves).
Hofstra closed the deficit to 2-1 less than four minutes later as Witmer tipped in a pass from sophomore
Simca Schoen on the doorstep following a penalty corner. It was Witmer's first goal of the year.
The score remained at 2-1 until the 58th minute when UD's leading scorer, freshman Lisa Giezeman collected another rebound and tallied her 10th goal of the season for a 3-1 advantage.
The Pride came back once again just 2:08 later as
Stella Schoen notched her 11th goal of the year on an outstanding individual effort in the circle to close the gap to 3-2.
But Delaware sealed the contest at the 64:16 mark as Peet scored her ninth of the season, off a penalty corner, with Mikelson and junior Maura Zarkoski assisting.
Hofstra outshot Delaware, 17-14 in the contest while the Blue Hens held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Pride return to action on Sunday, October 11 when they host the Tigers of Towson in another CAA contest at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
