MSOC: #23 Hofstra Drops Double Overtime Decision At Duke

Durham, N.C. – Sophomore forward Danny Elliott and senior defender Marius Flateboe each scored to stake Hofstra to a two-goal lead, but Duke scored three straight goals, including Brian White's game-winner with 3:27 left in double overtime, as the Pride fell to the Blue Devils, 3-2, on Monday night at Koskinen Stadium.

Hofstra, ranked 23rd by the NSCAA, dropped to 8-3 on the season despite eight saves from senior goalkeeper Patric Pray. Brody Huitema and Zach Mathers added goals for Duke, who scored all three goals after Hofstra received a red card to go down to 10 players. The Blue Devils improved to 5-4-2.

Junior midfielder Joseph Holland assisted on both of Hofstra's goals to increased his Colonial Athletic Association-leading total to seven. Holland increased his point total to 17, tying him with UNCW's Colin Bonner for the league lead.

A scoreless first half broke open in the second half when Elliott converted a rebound attempt at the 54:20 mark. Duke goalkeeper Mitch Kupstas made the initial save before Elliott scored his first of the season.

Flateboe scored his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute, converting on a Kupstas' misplay. But Duke did not let up. The Blue Devils posted a 25-11 edge in shots and a 16-7 edge after halftime. The game's momentum shifted when freshman defender Sean Nealis was red-carded in the 65th minute. Nealis, who accrued his first yellow card in the final seconds of the first half, was sent off, forcing the Pride to play down a man.

Duke cut the deficit in half in the 69th minute on Mathers left-side goal off a free kick. The Blue Devils then forced overtime when Huitema scored off Jeremy Ebobisse's pass, knotting the score at 2 just 4:02 before the end of regulation.

A scoreless first overtime period sent the game into a second session and White scored the golden goal by finishing to the far post off Mathers' pass in the 107th minute. The game marked the first time Hofstra and Duke ever opposed each other.

Hofstra will resume CAA play on Saturday by hosting Delaware. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
