MSOC: Hawkins Scores Double-OT Winner To Push #14 Hofstra Past Delaware

Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior Harri Hawkins ended a scoreless deadlock by scoring to the far post in the 109th minute to lift 14th-ranked Hofstra to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hawkins' goal off junior Joseph Holland's pass to the left side marked his second scoring strike this year and helped the Pride improve to 4-0 in CAA play and 9-3 overall. The Pride earned its highest ranking since 2006 in Tuesday's NSCAA national poll. Delaware, the CAA preseason favorite, fell to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Senior goalkeeper Patric Pray made five saves, including three in the first half and one in the first overtime period, to register his 16th career shutout to tie Greg Cumpstone for second-most on the team's all-time list. Matthias Gumbrecht holds the record at 23. Pray has posted five clean sheets this season.

Hofstra has won the first four conference games for the first time since 1997 when the Pride went 9-0 in the America East. It is the first time the squad has won the opening four leagues games since joining the CAA in 2002.

The best scoring chance in regulation came late in the 71st minute when sophomore Danny Elliott had his point blank shot blocked and his rebound attempt hit into defender Nick DiRienzo.

Hofstra played its third consecutive double-overtime game. After defeating William & Mary last week and falling to Duke on Monday, the Pride did not tire in again logging additional minutes. Reigning CAA Player of the Year Guillermo Delgado had his shot blocked in the 107th minute and Hofstra responded when Hawkins tracked down the ball on the left side, closed in and beat goalkeeper Todd Morton to the opposite post for the game-winner.

Holland increased his CAA assist lead to 18 with the helper. The London, England native entered the week fifth in NCAA Division I in that category.

Hofstra will resume conference play Wednesday versus Northeastern at 7 p.m.
