New York, NY – Junior
Claudia Marin Samper posted a goal and two assists and sophomore
Carys Swan made seven saves to lead the Hofstra Pride to its eighth consecutive victory with a 4-3 win over the Columbia Lions in the Columbia Field Hockey Venue at the Baker Athletics Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Pride, who have now equaled the second longest winning streak in school history, improved to 10-3 on the season heading into their Colonial Athletic Association opener next Friday, October 9 against 13th-ranked Delaware at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. The 2003 Pride team won eight consecutive games to start the 2003 season while the school record is nine games set in 1987 and over two seasons in 2002 and 2003.
Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Columbia and staved off a late Lions rally to record the 11th double-digit season victory total of head coach
Kathy De Angelis' 18-year tenure.
Freshman
Madison Sauve opened the scoring just 2:04 into the contest, off a pass from Marin Samper, for her second goal of the season. Classmate
Samantha Schlegel notched her fifth goal of the season just one minute before halftime, off a feed from Marin Samper, for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Marin Samper boosted the Pride lead to 3-0 in the 46th minute with an unassisted tally for her 15th goal of the year.
But Columbia came roaring back with consecutive goals by Katie Ruesterholz just two minutes apart to close the deficit to 3-2 at the 49:09 mark.
The Pride gave themselves some breathing room at the 54:15 mark when freshman
Madison Reed scored her first collegiate goal, off a rebound, to bump the Hofstra lead to 4-2. In the process, the Pride also chased starting Columbia goalie Kimberly Pianucci (2 saves). The Lions would utilize two goalies during the final 16 minutes.
Columbia made sure the final minutes would be exciting when Ruesterholz scored her third of the game and fifth of the season off a penalty corner at the 66:58 mark.
But the Pride defense stood tall behind Swan, who made seven saves including five in the second half.
Columbia outshot Hofstra in the contest, 15-10 and also had nine penalty corners while the Pride did not have one.
