FH: Stella Schoen Scores Twice To Lead Hofstra Over William and Mary

Williamsburg, VA - Junior Stella Schoen scored twice, including the game-winner with 4:21 to play in regulation, to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 3-2 come-from-behind, Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tribe of William and Mary at Busch Stadium Friday night.

Hofstra, which won its fourth consecutive contest, improved to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the CAA. The 14 victories are the second-most in school history.

The win also sets the Pride up for a showdown for the conference regular season title with the conference-leading and 17th-ranked Dukes of James Madison (12-5, 5-0) in Harrisonburg on Sunday. Both Delaware (13-5) and Drexel (7-10) are both 3-2 in conference play while Northeastern (5-12) is 2-3. William and Mary (6-12) is 1-5 and Towson (2-15) is 0-5 in the CAA. The top four teams qualify for the CAA Championship tournament on November 6 and 8.

In Friday night's contest, Hofstra jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 10:25 mark when Stella Schoen converted a penalty corner with junior Claudia Marin Samper, who had a goal and two assists on the night, and senior Leigh Maxwell-Smith assisting. It was Schoen's 15th goal of the season.

But the Tribe tied the game with 6:39 to play in the first half when sophomore Emma MacLeod deflected a shot by senior Peyton Smith past Pride sophomore goalie Lauren Saltus (2 saves) for her sixth goal of the year. Hofstra outshot William and Mary, 9-6 in the first 35 minutes while each team had five penalty corners. Tribe senior goalie Meredith Savage made all five of her saves in the contest in the first half.

William and Mary took a 2-1 lead at the 59:05 mark when senior Pippin Saunders tipped in a shot by sophomore Booter Ellis.

Hofstra put the pressure on the Tribe for the equalizer and were stymied by three defensive saves, including two by senior Maddy Moore, in the second half. The Pride's pressure paid off in the 66th minute. Schoen started the game-tying goal with a shot from the left that Marin Samper tipped under Savage to tie the game. It was Marin Samper's 18th goal of the season.

Just 17 seconds later, Hofstra converted their second penalty corner of the game as Schoen scored from Marin Samper and Maxwell-Smith for the 3-2 advantage. It was Schoen's 16th tally of the season and her third game-winning goal of the year.

The Pride outshot the Tribe, 16-8 for the game including 7-2 in the second half.

Hofstra travels to James Madison on Sunday (Nov. 1) for a noon contest.
