VB: Hofstra Stays Perfect In CAA Play With Another Five-Set Win

Wilmington, NC – Junior setter Hannah Klemm had 58 assists and 12 digs, while four different Pride players tallied double figures in kills as the Hofstra Volleyball team captured another exciting five-set win on Saturday night as they defeated UNCW at Hanover Hall.

The win was Hofstra's fifth straight.

With her 58 assists in the match, Klemm now has 2,925 in her career to move into fourth place all-time at Hofstra. She passed Ines Portuondo, who notched 2,871 assists from 1988-90.

Hofstra improved to 14-6 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win, while UNCW falls to 11-4 and 2-1 in league action.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 24-26 and 15-11 in favor of the visiting Pride.

Junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova led Hofstra with 19 kills, while freshman outside hitter Nanishka Perez (17), sophomore middle blocker Leticia Valente (16) and freshman middle blocker Michela Rucli (10) joined Kostova in double figures.

Freshman libero Luisa Domingues posted 21 digs for the Pride in the match, while Kostova, Rucli and Valente all had five blocks.

Hofstra took the first set after using a 4-0 run to break an 18-all tie and a kill from Valente ended the stanza and gave the Pride the early advantage.

Led by some strong serving from sophomore right side Brianna Montgomery, Hofstra scored the first five points of the second stanza. After UNCW closed the gap to 10-8, Montgomery came to the serving line once again and helped push the Pride's lead to 13-8. The Seahawks closed the gap to one, 24-23, late in the set but a Kostova kill ended the set and allowed the Pride to open up a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set saw UNCW jump all over the Pride to start as they led 10-2 and Hofstra was never able to recover as the Seahawks held on for a dominating win to earn their first set win of the match.

UNCW would rally late to earn a narrow win in the fourth set, setting up the match for an exciting fifth and final set.

Trailing 6-5 in the final set, Hofstra dug deep and used an 8-2 run to push the advantage to 13-8 following a kill from Kostova. UNCW closed to within 14-11 later in the stanza but Kostova put an end to the match with another kill as Hofstra kept its perfect conference record intact.

Nicole Lott had 17 kills for UNCW, while Kristen Powell added 14. Both players had 10 digs. Meredith Peacock tallied eight blocks and four kills.

Hofstra will continue its current stretch of five straight matches away from home next weekend when it visits Towson on Friday and James Madison on Sunday.
