MSOC: #17 Hofstra Falls To Stony Brook

Hempstead, N.Y. – Stony Brook's Vince Erdei scored a goal in both halves and Martin Giordano added the 86th-minute insurance goal as No. 17 Hofstra fell to the Seawolves, 3-0, in the home regular season finale Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride, which moved from 24th to 17th in the national poll earlier in the day, out-shot Stony Brook, 16-9. But Stony Brook goalkeeper Tom McMahon made three saves as Hofstra dropped to 11-6. The Seawolves improved to 6-6-3.

Hofstra clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship on Saturday and will host the CAA Championship semifinals and finals Nov. 14-16 regardless of what happens in the rest of the regular season. Sophomore forward Meshack Eshun Addy and junior midfielder Joseph Holland each posted four shots to lead the Pride's effort. Hofstra lost for the first time at home all season, dropping to 6-1.

Erdei opened the scoring by headed in Serge Gamwanya's cross at 23:10. Gamwanya then linked with Erderi again, sending a through-ball that Erdei chipped in for a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute.

Eshun Addy nearly gave Hofstra the early lead when the forward created his own shot, raced down the right flank and blasted a shot that crashed off the crossbar and bounced out in the 16th minute. In the 24th minute, Erdei headed in the left-side cross for the game-opening goal.

The score held until late in the second half when Hofstra pushed its team up in search of the equalizer. Stony Brook capitalized on the extra room. Gamwanya's pass forced Hofstra senior goalkeeper Patric Pray to retreat back after he was playing out to help the offensive push. Erdei took advantage of the strategy by scoring off a chip for his season's eighth goal. Pray made four saves total.

Giordano scored his season's second goal when he finished Thibault Duval's feed at 85:46.

Hofstra will have one last regular season tune-up when the Pride plays at James Madison on Saturday at 7 p.m.
