MSOC: #17 Hofstra Falls To JMU In Regular Season Finale

Harrisonburg, Va. – James Madison's Eric Schmidt scored in the seventh minute and Connor Coward added a goal later in the opening half as nationally ranked Hofstra fell to the Dukes, 2-0, in the regular season finale Saturday night at University Park.

Hofstra, which entered the week ranked 17th in the latest NSCAA national poll, fell to 11-7 and 6-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Pride entered the game having already clinched the league's regular season championship. Hofstra earned a bye in the CAA Championship quarterfinals and will host the league's semifinal and championship rounds at Hofstra Soccer Stadium from Nov. 13-15.

James Madison is 3-3-2 in CAA play and clinched a spot in the CAA Championship. The Dukes improved to 4-9-4 overall and will have a chance to defend its CAA title as the fifth seed. Schmidt scored a goal and assisted on the second scoring strike for a three-point game.

Hofstra will face the winner of the matchup between the fourth-seeded Charleston Cougars and JMU in the semifinals. Second-seeded Elon will get the winner of the third-seeded Delaware and sixth-seeded UNCW game.

Hofstra senior goalkeeper Patric Pray made five saves to keep Hofstra in the game. JMU counterpart Kyle Morton made six of his seven saves in the second half as the Pride made a late push. The Pride posted a 12-3 edge in corners, including 6-1 in the second half, as the Pride saw a balanced attack try and mount a comeback bid.

Four Hofstra players logged two shots, including sophomore forward Danny Elliott, junior Andreas Iosifides and junior Harri Hawkins. Junior Mario Ruiz added two shots off the bench.

Schmidt gave JMU the early lead, scoring off a rebound 6:40 in. Daniel Roppert's free kick went into the box and Pray made the save, though Schmidt scored from a short distance off the ricochet for his season's third goal.

The Dukes went ahead 2-0 exactly 22 minutes in when Schmidt played a ball over the top and Coward's right-footed shot netted his fifth goal of the season. JMU's Billy Metzler also contributed a game-high four shots.

It was the first time the schools met since JMU defeated the Pride in the 2014 conference tournament quarterfinals in Hempstead. The Dukes went on to the win the tournament and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament as the sixth and last seed.

Hofstra will have 12 days off before playing in the semifinals on Nov. 13.
