MSOC: #24 Hofstra Clinches CAA Regular Season Crown With Win Over #10 Elon

Hempstead, N.Y. – Sophomore Mani Walcott scored an 80th minute goal to account for the game's only offense as No. 24 Hofstra clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Elon Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The Pride improved to 6-1 in league play and will host the semifinal and championship rounds of the CAA Championship from Nov. 13-15. Head Coach Richard Nuttall's team posted its first win over a top-10 team since 2005 when Hofstra defeated then-No. 7 ODU. Hofstra is 11-5 overall and Elon fell to 12-4.

Walcott scored off junior Rory Murphy's left-side pass off a rebound attempt for his third goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper Patric Pray, who was one of four Hofstra players to be honored on Senior Night, made four saves for his 17th career shutout. That moved him into sole possession of second place on the team's all-time list.

Hofstra defeated three ranked teams in a single season for the first time since 2005. The Pride previous beat No. 15 Syracuse and No. 24 UNCW and was tied at 1 at No. 13 Coastal Carolina last week  before falling in the last 10 minutes of regulation.

Hofstra earned a bye in the CAA championship quarterfinals by putting pressure on Elon's back line in the late stages. Junior Joseph Holland put a hard shot on goal that Phoenix goalkeeper Matthew Jegier stopped. Murphy collected the rebound and hit Walcott for the goal. Jegier made three saves total.

Elon's Taylor Adler fired an 85th minute shot as part of Elon's comeback bid, but Pray made the save to preserve the win. A defense led by Murphy and senior Marius Flateboe as well as freshman Sean Nealis and Harri Hawkins helped limit Elon to just four on-target shots and only two corners.

Hofstra will close the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt against Long Island rival Stony Brook. The Pride will then end the regular season at James Madison on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. before heading into the CAA semifinals for the first time since 2012.

Hofstra earned a share of the 2014 CAA regular season title, ending in a three-way tie. The Pride will be looking for its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006. The Pride will be hosting the CAA Championship semifinals and finals for the first time since joining the league.
