MSOC: #22 Hofstra Falls On Late Road Goal To #13 Coastal Carolina

Conway, S.C. – Sophomore forward Danny Elliott scored the tying goal off a 78th-minute header, but Coastal Carolina's Bryce Follensbee's 83rd-minute goal broke the deadlock and sent Hofstra to a 2-1 loss in a non-conference matchup of nationally ranked teams Monday night at CCU Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra, ranked 22nd in the latest NSCAA national poll, erased a 1-0 deficit late in the second half when sophomore Meshack Eshun Addy sent in a well-placed right-flank cross. Elliot, who was in the box, elevated and squared a fast-moving header for his second goal this season. But Follensbee's seventh goal less than six minutes later sent Hofstra to its first losing streak of the season with the Pride dropping to 10-5. Coastal Carolina, ranked 13th by the NSCAA and 11th by Top Drawer Soccer, improved to 10-1-1.

Coastal Carolina out-shot Hofstra, 15-4 in the game and 6-2 in the second half. But the Pride held the Chanticleers to just two shots on goal in the opening half and senior Patric Pray posting one of his four total saves to keep the deficit at 1-0. Darius Strambler linked with Arnar Geirsson for the opening goal at 35:26. Strambler scored his second of the season by finding space to the inside right post.

That score held until Elliott's header at 77:06. Elliott's second goal on his only shot marked his first scoring strike since Oct. 5 at Duke.

Hofstra already had defeated two nationally ranked teams this season with home wins over Syracuse and UNCW. The Pride would have posted three wins over ranked teams in a single season for the first time since 2006.

Tobenna Uzo set up Coastal Carolina's game-winning goal by racing down the left side to attract multiple Hofstra defenders. Uzo slipped a leading pass to center and Follensbee capitalized by running to the back post and pushing a shot in after Pray raced out to cut off the ball. Coastal Carolina was called for eight offsides in the contest but stayed onside for the play to capture the win.

Hofstra is 5-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play and has two regular season conference games remaining, including a matchup with No. 11 Elon at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Pride could still win the outright regular season title and lock up the first seed if the team defeats Elon and wins against James Madison on Oct. 31.
