MSOC: #22 Hofstra Defeats Northeastern In Second Straight Home Double OT Thriller

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra stayed undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play as junior Joseph Holland's 107th-minute goal lifted the Pride to a 2-1 double-overtime home victory over Northeastern on Wednesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore defender Jon Fraser assisted on both goals for his first two collegiate points and senior goalkeeper Patric Pray made seven saves to help the 22nd-ranked Pride improve to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in league play. Elon, ranked 11th, defeated UNCW earlier in the night to improve to 4-1 as the Pride maintained a one-game lead for first place. Northeastern's Christian McKenna scored the lone goal for the Huskies as NU dropped to 1-8-2 and 1-4.

Junior midfielder Lerthon Theuma scored his first goal of the season in the 34th minute to stake Hofstra to a 1-0 lead. Holland's sixth goal of the season tied sophomore Meshack Eshun Addy for the team lead and helped the Pride continue the program's best conference start since the 1997 squad went 9-0 in the regular season against the America East.

Hofstra has played four consecutive double-overtime games and is 3-1 in those contests, including back-to-back home wins. Hofstra is 5-0 at home this season. The last time Head Coach Richard Nuttall's team played four consecutive double-overtime games came in 2012 when the team tied the regular season finale and all three CAA Tournament contests went beyond regulation.

Theuma scored his first goal since his collegiate debut on Sept. 1, 2013 when his header beat Northeastern goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson at 33:53. Theuma subbed in for Eshun Addy and finished Fraser's cross just 31 seconds later to give the Pride a lift off the bench.

Fraser, who entered the game without a point in 30 career games, got on the scoresheet for the first time in his career by setting up Theuma on a right-side pass that was knocked in near the left post.

That score held until McKenna came off the bench to score at 53:31. McKenna scored his first of the season off Khesanio Hall's cross from five yards out for the tying goal.

It looked like McKenna's goal would result in a point for both teams until Fraser posted a multi-point game in facilitating Holland's game-winner. His outlet pass set up Holland's goal to the left corner and helped the Pride post its first win over Northeastern since 2007. Seven of the Huskies' eight losses have come by a single goal.

Hofstra will return to CAA action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff against the College of Charleston on the road. The Pride will stay in the state and face No. 13 Coastal Carolina on Monday at 6 p.m. Hofstra will next be in action at home  versus Elon on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
