MBB: Green Scores 25 In Loss To Towson

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra's Juan'ya Green scored a game-high 25 points but it was not enough to overcome a hot-shooting second half from Towson as the Pride fell, 86-72, Saturday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Towson shot 64 percent in the second half and 58 percent for the game in improving to 11-12 on the season and 4-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra, which suffered its third consecutive loss, fell to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in league play.

Green's 25 points were one off his season-high and his highest scoring output in three weeks. The junior also added five assists and three steals.

Hofstra led 37-36 at the half following an opening 20 minutes that featured 12 lead changes and six tie scores. Hofstra jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 53 seconds on a Jamall Robinson jumper and a three-pointer from Ameen Tanksley. Towson responded with an 8-2 run to take an 8-7 lead on Byron Hawkins' three-pointer with 16-10 on the clock. The Tigers would extend the lead to as many as seven, 17-10, on a jumper from Four McGlynn with 13:37 on the clock.

The Pride used a 13-6 run highlighted by eight points from Dion Nesmith to tie the score at 23 with 7:35 remaining. The teams would trade the lead 11 times over the final seven minutes before Green sent the Pride into intermission with the edge following a pair of free throws with one-tenth of a second to play.

Towson came out of halftime and scored five straight points to take a 41-37 lead 45 seconds into the half. The Pride cut the deficit to 42-41 on a pair of Green free throws before the Tigers ran off seven consecutive points to take their then-largest lead of the game, eight points (49-41), with 15:20 remaining.
The Tigers extended to a nine-point advantage, 58-49, with 10:44 to play on a pair for free throws from Eddie Keith II. Towson would take a 10-point lead with 9:13 left on a jumper from Timajh Parker-Rivera.

Brian Bernardi got the Pride within seven, 62-55, with three free throws with nine minutes on the clock, but John Davis pushed the lead back to nine for Towson with two free throws of his own with 8:30 remaining and McGlynn made it an 11-point game with a lay-up with 7:49 left in the game. Hofstra would not get closer than six points the rest of the way, 76-70, with 1:36 to go.

McGlynn lead five Tigers in double-figures with 22 points and also contributed four assists. Mike Morsell and Davis chipped in 14 points apiece, while Parker-Rivera and Hawkins each had 12 points. Parker-Rivera also had nine rebounds to pace the Tigers.

Nesmith had 13 points for the Pride, while Tanksley had 10 points and a team-best five rebounds.

Hofstra returns to action Wednesday evening at Delaware before returning home to host Elon next Saturday night (February 7) at 7 p.m.
