MBB: Strong Outside Shooting Leads Hofstra Past Delaware

Newark, DE – Junior forward Ameen Tanksley had 22 points, including five three-pointers, and sophomore guard Brian Bernardi had 14 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a 79-69 victory over Delaware on Wednesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The win ended a short three-game losing skid for the Pride, which improved to 15-9 overall and 6-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Delaware fell to 5-17 and 4-7 in conference action. The win also allowed Hofstra to sweep the season series from the Blue Hens as the Pride captured a 71-58 victory back on January 5 in Hempstead.

Both teams would get off to a slow start in the contest as the squads combined for just 10 points over the first nearly seven minutes of the game.

Hofstra would lead 7-3 as Tanksley opened the scoring with a three-pointer at the 19:13 mark before sophomore guard Jamall Robinson and senior center Moussa Kone added buckets to stake the Pride to the early advantage.

The Pride would open up its largest lead at 19-9 as graduate guard Dion Nesmith drained a three-pointer with 8:14 left before intermission. Delaware would respond, though, and the Blue Hens used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-18 with 4:27 left before halftime.

Hofstra would take an eight-point lead into the break as the Pride's last six made field goals of the half were three-pointers, including a trifecta from Robinson with 24 ticks left on the first half clock that made it 33-25 in favor of Hofstra.

Delaware closed the gap to two, 33-31, to start the second half as the Blue Hens got three-pointers from Cazmon Hayes and Kyle Anderson to open the stanza scoring.

A pair of free throws from Tanksley and a three-pointer from junior guard Juan'ya Green would stem the tide back in the Pride's favor and allow Hofstra to take a seven-point lead, 38-31, into the under-16 media timeout.

Hofstra would continue to lead the majority of the second half with Delaware gradually chipping away at the Pride advantage and cutting the lead to three, 51-48, with 7:58 left in regulation following a layup from Marvin King-Davis.

With the Pride clinging to the three-point lead, Hofstra used a 9-0 run to open up a 60-48 lead following a three-pointer from Bernardi. It would be the Pride's largest advantage of the contest to that point.

Bernardi would heat up for Hofstra down the stretch as hit sank a trio of three-pointers, including one with 4:29 left to allow the Pride to continue to hold a double-digit lead.

It would prove to be the dagger the Pride would need as they would go on to capture a 10-point victory.

Green finished with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for Hofstra, which also got six points and five rebounds from Kone. Tanksley led the Pride with six rebounds.

Chivarsky Corbett had 13 for the Blue Hens, which also got 12 points from Kyle Anderson and Hayes.
