WBB: Hofstra’s Late Comeback Bid Falls Short To Tribe

Williamsburg, Va. – Hofstra erased a double-digit second-half deficit at one juncture and had a chance to take the lead with three seconds left, but William & Mary's Abby Rendle blocked Darius Faulk's potential game-winning basket as the Pride fell to the Tribe 57-56, in a Sunday Colonial Athletic Association matinee from Kaplan Arena.

Freshman forward Ashunae Durant paced Hofstra with 15 points while registering nine rebounds and sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka notched a double-double thanks to 13 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes. But Hofstra lost its second straight CAA game in falling to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.

William & Mary saw four players score in double figures, led by Rendle and Jazmen Boone scoring 13. Alexandra Masaquel contributed 12 points and Marlena Tremba contributed 10 as the Tribe improved to 8-11 and 2-6 against the CAA.

Faulk, a junior guard, scored 10 points and added two assists, though her final shot on the low right block couldn't arc over Rendle's reach with just less than two seconds left. William & Mary snapped a 10-game losing skid to Hofstra in the series. Hofstra still leads the all-time series 23-9-1.

Durant scored in double figures for a third consecutive game and fifth time in the last seven contests. Faulk reached double digits for the third time in her Hofstra career and the second time in the last three games since scoring 11 versus UNCW on Jan. 18.

Edeferioka logged a double-double for the second consecutive game and the sixth time this season.

Down 38-31 at the break, William & Mary capitalized on two turnovers and scored four straight points to force a Hofstra timeout in the opening minute of the second half down 42-31 following Masaquel's head-on jumper.

But Hofstra erased the 11-point deficit on Edeferioka's jumper with 6:02 left that knotted the score at 53. The Pride forced William & Mary to miss eight-of-nine field goal attempts during that stretch.

Rendle and Boone each added baskets to put the Tribe up four. Edeferioka responded by connecting on a second-chance put back that fell in after going off the back rim to cut it to 57-55.

With 1:50 left, Durant had a chance to tie the score but made the last of her two free throws after missing the first one. Durant nearly gave Hofstra the lead with 18.1 seconds left when she banked in a left-wing shot, but it came after the shot clock expired.

Hofstra fouled and benefited from a missed Trembla free throw on a one-and-one, giving the Pride one last shot to pull away before Rendle's block.

The Tribe went on a 13-2 opening run 3:15 in. William & Mary forced 15 turnovers through the first 20 minutes, though the Pride stayed within 38-31 at the break thanks to 50 percent field goal shooting. Durant and Faulk powered Hofstra's offense in the first half with the former scoring 12 points thanks in part to 6-of-8 free-throw shooting while Faulk poured in eight points by making all three of her field goal attempts.

Tremba and Rendle each scored 10 points in the opening half. But Hofstra enjoyed a 12-2 fast-break scoring advantage and moved within two points of William & Mary on Durant's three-point play with 2:10 left and the score 33-31.

Edeferioka helped Hofstra win the opening tip for the 16th time in 19 games.

William & Mary wore purple warmups as part of raising awareness for Alzheimer's disease. The Hofstra coaching staff also wore purple.

Hofstra will hit the road again with a Thursday matchup at Northeastern. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Cabot Center.
