WBB: Hofstra Drops CAA Clash To Drexel

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Elo Edeferioka tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead three Pride players in double-figures but sophomore Alexis Smith tallied 16 points and senior Jamila Thompson added 15 to lead four Dragon players in double-figures as Drexel defeated Hofstra, 63-56 in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the Mack Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

A season-high crowd of 1,864 watched the contest at Hofstra's "What I Want to Be Day" for Long Island grade school children. The Pride fell to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the CAA while Drexel improved to 11-7 on the season and 5-2 in conference action.

Edeferioka recorded her fifth double-double of the season and ninth of her career by hitting on 7-of-10 field goals for 15 points and grabbing 12 caroms, including seven off the offensive boards. Sophomore Kelly Loftus tallied 13 points, including three three-pointers, while freshman Ashunae Durant added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the year. Hofstra shot 34 percent (19-56) from the field, and was just 5-for-22 from the three-point line.

Smith was 5-for-9 from the field, including two-for-three from the arc, to record her season-high 16 points for Drexel. Thompson was 7-for-8 from the field to post her career-high 15 points. Sophomore Sarah Curran was 5-for-9 from the field for 14 points and recorded six assists while junior Rachel Pearson tallied 10 points and a season-high and team-high eight rebounds to lead the Dragons. Drexel shot 44 percent (24-for-54) from the field, including 6-of-11 from the three-point line.

Durant and Edeferioka notched double-doubles in the same game for the second time this season. The duo both posted double-doubles versus Northern Iowa on Nov. 28, 2014.

The Dragons, who trailed just twice in the first half at 15-14 at the 10:50 mark on a Loftus three-pointer and19-17 on a Faulk layup with 8:55 to play, opened up their biggest lead of the half in the final eight minutes. Drexel went on a 16-2 run, started by Pearson jumper and ended by a Smith three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining in the half to open a 33-21 lead.

Hofstra's Durant hit a jumper 24 seconds later to end the scoring in the period with the Pride trailing, 33-23 at the break. The Dragons shot 48 percent (14-for-29) in the first 20 minutes with Curran, who had seven points in the big run, leading the team with 10 points. Hofstra struggled from the field, shooting 35 percent (10-for-29), including just 2-14 from the three-point line, with Edeferioka leading the Pride with nine points.

The Pride opened the half shooting and hitting and went on a 14-5 run over the first 6:13 of the period to close to within one at 38-37 on a Luciano three-pointer. Loftus and Durant each had four points during the run. But the Dragons responded strongly and scored the next 12 points, starting with freshman Kelsi Lidge's three-pointer and concluding with a Thompson jumper at the 9:08 mark to open up a 50-37 lead.

Hofstra then went on an 11-3 spurt, sparked by two Loftus three-pointers, to close to within five at 53-48 on an Edeferioka layup with 5:05 to play. But senior Jackie Schluth's jumper 30 seconds later started a 6-2 Dragon spurt, behind four points from Smith, to build a 59-50 advantage with 1:04 to play. The Pride couldn't mount a final charge in the final 64 seconds and were only able to close to within seven three times during that period including at the buzzer on a layup from Edeferioka.

Hofstra now hits the road for two CAA games beginning with a trip to William and Mary on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
