WBB: Hofstra Stays Unbeaten In CAA Play With Win At Towson

Towson, Md. – Sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka fell one rebound shy of a double-double by scoring a game-high 17 points to help Hofstra stay undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play with a 58-42 victory over Towson on Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.

Junior guard Asia Jackson scored all but two of her 10 total points in the second half and sophomore guard Krystal Luciano added 11 points. Hofstra held Towson to just 28.1 percent  shooting from the floor to help the Pride improve to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in league play. Ciara Webb (12 points) and LaTorri Hines-Allen (11 points) scored in double figures for Towson. The Tigers still dropped to 6-10 and 2-2.

Hofstra started 4-0 against the CAA for the first time since the 2011-12 squad won its first four conference games. The Pride can set a program record for best start in conference action with one more win.

The Pride defeated Towson for the first time since the 2011-12 season, snapping a three-game skid. Hofstra won its first-ever game in the second-year SECU Arena and improved to 29-30 in the all-time series.

Junior guard Darius Faulk posted a game-high eight assists and scored six points. Freshman Ashunae Durant, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds in the team's win at Drexel two days prior, added six points and five rebounds.

Towson cut it as close as 20-16 in the second half on Dominique Johnson's jumper on Towson's first possession. But Hofstra went on a 6-0 run to prompt a Towson timeout following Edeferioka's put-back layup and a 26-16 lead for the Pride's first double-digit advantage.

Hofstra would be in control the rest of the way. Edeferioka grabbed Kelly Loftus' three-point miss and went straight back up for a three-point play and a 31-18 lead.

Faulk, who had two key steals in the final minute of overtime in the Pride's road win Friday at Drexel, posted another steal and drew a foul on the coast-to-coast attempt. Her free throws put Hofstra ahead, 39-21, to cap an 8-0 run to quell any Towson comeback hopes.

A Hofstra opponent was held to less than 50 points for the third time season. Towson's point total was a season-low, eclipsing the previous low-water mark of 47 points that Hofstra limited Norfolk State and NJIT. All three of those games have been Hofstra road victories.

The Pride tied a season-low for points allowed in a half en route to a 20-14 lead at the break.  A combination of man-press defense held Towson to 4-for-28 shooting from the field (14.3 percent). The point total was the lowest in a half for a Hofstra opponent since NJIT also scored 14 in the first half on Dec. 9.

Luciano scored five points in the half while Webb scored eight of Towson's points in the half. Hofstra forced Towson to miss 12 consecutive shots, but only led 5-3 as both teams went a combined 4-for-23 from the field through the opening 10 minutes.

Towson's futility stretch was 1-for-19 and 2-for-23 at one point, allowing Hofstra to build a 17-9 lead before Webb helped the home team close the gap.

Hines-Allen entered as the CAA's second-leading scorer by averaging 19.7 points. But the senior forward picked up her second foul with more than eight minutes remaining in the first half and was held to 1-of-9 shooting with two turnovers. Hines-Allen finished 5-for-20 from the field overall.

Hofstra will conclude a three-game road swing on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a matchup against Delaware at the Carpenter Center. The Pride will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.
