Box Score West Long Branch, N.J. – Freshman defende Kristin Desmond notched her first career two-goal game by scoring the go-ahead goal and adding an insurance marker in the second half in Hofstra's 4-1 win over Monmouth in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
Desmond's goal in the 65th minute broke a tie score and helped Hofstra snap a two-game losing streak to move over the .500 mark at 5-4. Monmouth fell to 5-3.
Junior forward Leah Galton scored her second goal in three games. Hofstra ended the contest with three unanswered goals, including senior forward Sam Scolarici's Colonial Athletic Association-leading 10th goal in the final minute to lift Hofstra to its first road victory of the season.
Senior Lulu Echeverry helped to open the scoring in the 38th minute when she sent a cross into the Monmouth box. Galton finished with a one-touch goal for her sixth of the season. Her total trails only Scolarici for the team lead.
In the final game before CAA play begins, the Pride out-shot the Hawks, 16-12. Monmouth tied the score exactly 10 minutes into the second half when Erica Murphy scored off Monique Goncalves threw-pass and scored to the far post.
Hofstra took the lead for good off a corner kick. Junior Jeannine Molleda connected with Desmond, who finished a one-timer for her second career goal. Desmond converted a penalty kick chance in the 83rd minute to end Monmouth's comeback hopes.
Desmond, who had one goal in first eight career games (in a win over Indiana State on Sept. 7), now has three goals on the season. Scolarici tacked on a final goal with 43 seconds left by beating goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino on a 19-yard free kick. D'Agostino finished with three saves.
Scolarici set Hofstra's all-time points record in the Pride's previous game on Friday versus Yale and became the team's all-time goal-scoring leader earlier this year. Scolarici has now scored double-digit goals in three straight seasons after notching 10 as a sophomore in 2012 and a school single-season record 18 in 2013.
Desmond, who has become a dependable defender in her rookie collegiate season, has eight points through her first nine collegiate games. The Long Island Player of the Year out of Northport High School has helped Hofstra out-score opponents, 26-15.
Sophomore goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made four saves. Galton and senior forward Amber Stobbs supported the netminder with each posting four shots.
Hofstra will start conference play on Friday at Elon at 7 p.m.
