Hempstead, NY – Senior forward
Jonel Boileau scored her third goal of the season 3:57 into the first overtime to give the Hofstra Pride a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Fairfield Stags in the Pride's home opener at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday.
The Pride won their fourth consecutive game of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year. Fairfield, which dropped its second consecutive game, falls to 2-3.
Boileau, the Pride captain, scored the game-winner in the 7-on-7 overtime period off a short pass across the middle of the circle from freshman
Simca Schoen, beating Fairfield freshman goalie Emma Ball (5 saves). It was Boileau's 35th goal of her career.
Hofstra jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest as unmarked junior
Charlotte Loehr, took a pass from Schoen, following a penalty corner, and drilled a low shot into the goal for her third of the season. The Pride dominated play in the first half, taking eight shots to the Stags two and forcing Ball to make three saves in the first 35 minutes.
But Fairfield turned the tables on Hofstra in the second half, outshooting the Pride, 8-3 and getting the equalizer in the 59th minute. Freshman Marta Laginja took a pass back from senior Felicitas Heinen and drilled a bullet past Hofstra freshman goalie
Carys Swan (3 saves) from the middle of the circle. It was Laginja's first goal of her career.
Hofstra outshot Fairfield, 13-10 in the contest while the Stags had the penalty corner advantage, 5-4. The Pride is now 4-1 on the season for the first time since the 2012 season.
Hofstra returns to action this weekend when they compete in the Catamount Classic at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. The Pride will face the host Catamounts at noon on Saturday, September 13 and the University of Maine Black Bears on Sunday, September 14 at noon.
