WBB: Hofstra Extends Streak With Road Win Over Boston College

By Brian Bohl

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Sophomore Kelly Loftus made all five of her three-pointers in the second half and sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka logged a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to help Hofstra defeat Boston College, 75-61, in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Conte Forum.

Loftus scored all but two of her game-high 22 total points after halftime and sophomore guard Krystal Luciano helped run the offense with 12 points, five rebounds and an assist as the Pride extended its winning streak to four in improving to 7-3. The Pride upended the Eagles for the first time in three games in the all-time series. Boston College fell to 6-5 despite Nicole Boudreau's 18 points.

Hofstra improved to 4-0 in December and led for all but 3:49. All four wins during the streak have come by double digits. The win was the third over a power-conference school since the 2012-13 season and the first against an ACC-member school under Head Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey.

Edeferioka scored in double figures for the sixth time this season and notched her fourth double-double of the campaign and the eighth of her career by shooting 7-for-12. Freshman Ashunae Durant, who is the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player and Rookie of the Week, added 10 points and seven rebounds as one of four Hofstra players finished in double figures.

Loftus made at least four three-pointers in a game for the fourth consecutive contest. The team's hot shooting extended to the foul line as the Pride went a collective 24-for-29 at the stripe (82.8 percent), led by Luciano's 7-for-8 effort.

The Pride continued to capitalize on Edeferioka's strong showing in the post late in the second half when the Warri, Nigeria native executed a power move on the low right block that resulted in a three-point play and a 59-46 lead with 9:05 remaining.

That continued a trend of Hofstra answering whenever Boston College was primed to make a run. The Eagles moved within three points before Loftus made back-to-back three-pointers to put Hofstra ahead, 42-33. Loftus has scored at least 15 points in four consecutive games, including a pair of 20-point performances.

Red-shirt sophomore Anjie White made her Hofstra debut and drew a foul in the paint on her first offensive possession. White drilled both free throws for her first points in a Pride uniform.  Her left-handed shooting touch and Darius Faulk's cost-to-cost steal and layup staked Hofstra to a 12-3 lead. The Pride held Boston College to 1-for-12 shooting from the field through the opening 9:40.

White finished with seven points and four rebounds in 11 effective minutes in her first collegiate game action since playing for George Washington University in 2012-13.

The Pride entered the game a perfect 6-0 when leading at halftime. Hofstra held Boston College to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes to take a 34-26 lead. Edeferioka scored eight points with seven rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting entering the locker room.

Both teams shot less than 37 percent from the field in the opening half, though strong free-throw shooting (both squads were 10-for-13) help offset the lackluster shooting. Luciano converted the first four-point play of the season for the Pride when she hit a right-wing three-pointer with 2:42 left while being hit on the arm. Her made free throw extended Hofstra's edge to a game-high 12 points with a 33-21 advantage.

The game marked a homecoming for Michael Gibson, the director of women's basketball operations, who is a 2008 Boston College graduate.

Hofstra will break for the holidays before playing its second consecutive ACC-member opponent on the road with a 7 p.m. game at Virginia Tech on Dec. 30.
