WBB: Hofstra’s Streak Ends With Road Loss To Virginia Tech

By Brian Bohl

Blacksburg, Va. – Vanessa Panousis scored a game-high 23 points for Virginia Tech to lift the Hokies to a 60-43 victory over Hofstra in the final regular season non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum.

Junior guard Asia Jackson contributed a team-high 11 points off the bench and fellow junior guard Darius Faulk scored seven for the Pride. Sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka's seven rebounds paced Hofstra.

Rachel Camp complemented Panousis by adding eight points and five rebounds and Dominique Powell nearly posted a double-double off the bench with 10 rebounds and eight points. Panousis tallied four assists.

The Pride's season-high four-game winning streak was snapped with the Pride ending non-league action 7-4. Virginia Tech won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 9-4. Hofstra fell to the ACC-member Hokies for the second straight season after dropping a 77-72 overtime decision at home in 2013. The Pride lost for the first time in December in going 4-1 on the month. The Pride lost for just the second time in six road games this season.

Both defenses didn't permit the opposition to shoot better than 32 percent from the field nor better than 27 percent from three-point range. Virginia Tech's rebounding advantage (51-33) was the difference with the Hokies finishing with a 19-10 edge on the offensive glass and a second-chance point differential of 21-7.

Jackson finished in double figures for the second time this season and the 11th time in her career. Redshirt-sophomore forward Anjie White posted seven rebounds and four points as a reserve.

Virginia Tech's 14-0 first-half run proved to be the difference in the game. Sidney Cook was a key factor in the Hokies' rebounding edge by grabbing nine of her game-high 14 rebounds on the defensive end.

A bright spot for the Pride was 25 bench points, which was aided by junior Jakelle King-Gilchrist's seven points in 15 minutes.

Faulk's layup brought Hofstra within 30-24 with 17:29 left in the second half. That would be the closest the Pride would get after Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run. Samantha Hill's three-pointer with 1:15 remaining gave the Hokies a game-high 19-point lead.

Hofstra held Virginia Tech to misses on its first nine field goal attempts en route to a 7-2 lead. The Pride led by as much as six and controlled play through the first half's midway mark, but the Hokies forged a 28-20 halftime lead as Virginia Tech went on a 14-0 run over a nearly five-minute span.

Kelsey Conyers capitalized on perimeter ball movement by hitting a left-wing three-point shot. Powell then capped the run on a put-back as part of a three-point play for the 28-17 advantage. The offensive rebound was the difference in the opening 20 minutes. The Hokies held a 10-1 edge on the offensive glass and an 11-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Camp appeared to hit a runner at the buzzer, but the officials waived off the basket after a video review to keep Hofstra's deficit to eight. Junior Asia Jackson and sophomore Anjie White each scored four points for the Pride off the bench heading into the break.

Hofstra will commence Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday with a home game against the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex. The Pride finished 8-8 in league play last season.
