VB: Balanced Attack Leads Hofstra To Rout Of Sacred Heart

Hempstead, NY – Led by 10 kills from sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova, the Hofstra Volleyball team had five players with at least seven kills as the Pride easily defeated Sacred Heart in three sets on Tuesday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Set scores were 25-9, 25-19 and 25-16 in favor of the Pride, which avenged a five-set loss to Sacred Heart back on September 13.

The win improved the Pride's record to 23-4 this season, while the Pioneers fell to 8-17 with the loss. The win was Hofstra's sixth straight at home.

Junior libero Corrina Delgadillo had 13 digs for Hofstra, while senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills tallied 13 digs and eight kills.

As a team, the Pride had a .356 attack percentage with 44 kills on 90 attempts and only 12 errors.

Hofstra completely dominated the first set, taking an early 5-2 lead en route to the 16-point rout. The Pride had no trouble offensively in the opening stanza, hitting at a .583 clip with 15 kills on 24 attempts and only one error. Senior middle blocker Adama Aja led the way for Hofstra with four kills on seven attempts and no errors.

In the second set, Hofstra would score five of the last six points to break open a close game as they earned a 25-19 victory. A kill from Kostova gave the Pride a 20-14 advantage before Sacred Heart scored four straight points to get within two at 20-18. Senior middle blocker Nuria Lopes da Silva was the key for the Pride in the second set as she had six kills in the set, including three straight kills after the Pioneers got to within two.

The third set would see the Pride score the first five points of the set and still hold a five-point advantage 10-5 later in the stanza. Hofstra gradually pulled away and held a 19-8 advantage before settling in for the nine-point win and the Pride's 15th win in straight sets this season.

Sophomore setter Hannah Klemm posted 38 assists and five digs for Hofstra. Joining the balanced offensive attack for the Pride was Aja (nine kills), senior outside hitter Emily Burke (eight kills) and Lopes da Silva with eight kills.

Makayla Dole led Sacred Heart with 11 kills, while Lila Palmer added four kills, four digs and two blocks.

Hofstra is back in action on Friday when it travels to Boston to face Northeastern at 7 p.m.
