Boston, MA – Sophomore setter
Hannah Klemm posted 45 assists and a career-high 17 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a four-set win over Northeastern on Friday evening at Cabot Gym.
The Pride also got a great effort out of junior libero
Corrina Delgadillo who notched a career-high 27 digs.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-12 in favor of the Pride.
The win improved Hofstra's record to 24-4 overall and 11-2 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Northeastern falls to 10-17 and 2-11 in conference action.
The 24 overall wins are the most since the 2006 squad, Hofstra's last NCAA Tournament team, also won 24 matches. The last time the Pride won more than 24 contests was during the 1999 campaign when Hofstra went 26-6 en route to the America East title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Despite the close final score in the first set, Hofstra never trailed as they held a large 20-12 advantage following a kill from senior outside hitter
Kelsie Wills before settling in for a narrow two-point win.
Back-to-back kills from Wills would allow Hofstra to start a 5-1 run in the second set that turned a 6-5 deficit into a 10-7 advantage following an attack error by the Huskies. Northeastern would close to within two at 16-14 later in the set, but the Pride would continue to lead the remainder of the stanza and three kills from sophomore middle blocker
Veronika Kostova in the waning moments of the second set would send the Pride to the 2-0 lead in the contest.
In the third set, Hofstra would hold a 9-8 lead before Northeastern began a 6-1 run that concluded with a kill from Ava Cramp. The Huskies would push the lead to 18-11 later in the set and Hofstra would be unable to recover as they dropped the set and the match would head to a fourth stanza.
Hofstra would leave no doubt once the fourth set began as the Pride broke a three-all tie with a 10-1 run that finished with consecutive kills from Wills. The Pride would cruise from that point and eventually pull away for a 13-point win.
Wills led Hofstra with 15 kills, while adding eight digs. Kostova was second with 14 kills, with senior middle blocker
Nuria Lopes da Silva added 11 kills and five digs.
Brigitte Burcescu had 13 kills for Northeastern, while Natalia Skiba picked up 33 digs and Jamie Bredahl had 14 assists.
Hofstra returns to action next week when it begins a busy stretch on Thursday by hosting James Madison at 7 p.m. The Pride will also host Charleston on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing the regular season with a 1 p.m. match against William & Mary on Sunday. Hofstra heads into the final week of the regular season in first place in the CAA standings. The regular season champion will host the CAA Championship on November 21-23.
