WBB: Hofstra Drops Season’s First Road Game At Fordham

By Brian Bohl

Bronx, N.Y. – Freshman guard Ashunae Durant scored a team-high 13 points and sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka added 12 points, but Fordham post players Emily Tapio and Samantha Clark both scored in double figures as Hofstra fell to the Rams, 60-46, on Friday night in a non-conference matchup at Rose Hill Gymnasium.

Edeferioka finished two rebounds shy of her second double-double this season, though Fordham's frontcourt of Clark (15 points) and Tapio (14 points) and helped give the Rams a 32-22 scoring advantage in the paint.

Hofstra dropped to 1-2 on the season while Fordham improved to 2-2 overall. The Rams pulled even in the all-time series at 9-9 as the two teams have split the last two meetings. In 2013-14, Hofstra defeated Fordham at home in a season in which the Rams went on to win the Atlantic 10 and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Durant finished in double figures for the third time in as many career games and grabbed all but one of her five total rebounds in the second half. Fordham's Hannah Missry scored nine points in 15 minutes off the bench.

Fordham went on an 11-2 run to start the second half, turning an eight-point lead into a comfortable cushion. The Rams scored inside and outside. Clark hit a three-pointer, prompting Hofstra to call its second timeout of the second half less than two minutes in and Tapio drew a foul on a drive and made both free throws for a 40-23 lead.

The Rams went ahead by as much as 50-31 before Edeferioka nailed a jumper near the midway mark of the half. Hofstra would get as close as 12 on freshman Aleana Leon's layup in the final minute. Leon finished with four points.

Fordham built an advantage in the paint and capitalized on turnovers to earn a 29-21 halftime lead. Tapio scored six of her total points in the opening half. Clark added five points and four rebounds with Fordham generating 13 turnovers and scoring 12 points off the possession swings.

Durant kept Hofstra close, scoring eight points in the opening half. After scoring 11 and 16 points, respectively, in her first two collegiate games, the Newark, New Jersey native nearly accomplished that feat before the break in shooting 4-of-7. Edeferioka corralled seven rebounds, helping the Pride stay close in a back-and-forth half that saw seven lead changes.

Hofstra will resume its first road swing of the season with a Sunday non-conference matchup at Norfolk State. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
