WBB: Hofstra Defeats Norfolk State For Season's First Road Win

By Brian Bohl

Norfolk, Va. – Sophomore Elo Edeferioka posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds and fellow sophomore Kelly Loftus scored a career-high 15 points to help Hofstra to a 64-47 victory over Norfolk State in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon from Echols Hall.

Edeferioka recorded her second double-double of the season and the sixth of her career and the Pride led for all but 1:55 of the game as Hofstra improved to 2-2. Norfolk State fell to 0-4.

Loftus scored seven of her total points in the second half. The Alexandria, Virginia native broke her previous career high of 14 points by connecting on a trio of three-pointers in her home state. Loftus had scored 14 points three times in her career with the last coming in Hofstra's first win of the season versus Fairfield.

Junior forward Sydni Epps added five points and six rebounds off the bench and junior guard Asia Jackson contributed seven points and three assists as a reserve. Hofstra registered its first road win of the season by holding NSU to 30.5 percent shooting from the field.

Hofstra did not allow a three-pointer as Head Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey saw her team force the Spartans to shoot 0-of-9 from three-point range.

NSU's Rae Corbo entered the game averaging 21.7 points and had scored 18 or more points in each of the first three games. But the Pride's defense held the fifth-year senior to nine points on 2-of-15 shooting. Corbo was still NSU's top performer with a near double-double with nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Edeferioka scored the first four points of the second half to turn a four-point edge at the break into a slight cushion that was needed when Ronesia Spicer scored off a missed free throw put-back to move NSU within 37-36 with 12:42 remaining.

Junior forward Dee Thomas-Palmer bank shot on the next trip down ensured the Spartans would not get closer. After a defensive stop, Loftus grabbed the defensive rebound and then drew Corbo's third foul while hitting a runner on the low left block for a 42-36 lead. Loftus missed her free throw, but the Pride gained the rebound and Jazamine Gray picked up her fourth foul and was substituted out.

Loftus hit a three-pointer in front of the Hofstra bench and Epps made the front end of a one-and-one on the next trip down for a 45-38 lead. Junior guard Darius Faulk, who scored six total points in her Hofstra debut, made a layup to put the Pride ahead, 54-44, and prompted NSU to call a timeout. The Spartans would not cut the deficit to single digits again.

Edeferioka compiled eight points and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes in the opening half in helping the Pride to a 30-26 lead at the break. The Pride started fast, as Luciano drained a left-wing open three-pointer to help Hofstra to a 9-2 lead.

Epps put-back off a missed free throw gave Hofstra a 10-point lead at 25-15. Thomas-Palmer re-established Hofstra's double-digit edge with 6:26 left in the half; a run bolstered in part by Loftus' eight points in the opening half.

But NSU closed within two possessions at halftime on the strength of Amber Brown's three-point play that made it 28-24. Faulk scored her first points as a member of the Pride before Io Chaney's jumper with less than 24 seconds left in the period established the halftime score.

Thomas-Palmer finished with five points and two rebounds off the bench.

Hofstra will return home for Friday and Saturday games when the team hosts its Thanksgiving Tournament, starting with a game versus Northern Iowa that is set to start at approximately 4 p.m. Western Kentucky will play Tulane in the first game of the tournament with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
