VB: Hofstra Falls To Charleston In Five Sets

Hempstead, NY - Senior Nuria Lopes da Silva had a match-high 19 kills to lead three Pride players in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as the College of Charleston claimed the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship with a 3-2 win over the Pride Friday night at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

The win gives the Cougars (21-9, 14-2) the top seed and the right to host the CAA Championship next weekend. Hofstra, which has one match remaining in the regular season, falls to 25-5 and 12-3 in the CAA.

The Cougars took the opening set, 25-14, hitting a blistering .312 (13-3-32) compared to the Pride's .061 hitting percentage (9-7-33). Melissa Morello paced Charleston with six kills in the set and also added three blocks. Kelsie Wills had a team-high four kills and four digs for the Pride.

The Pride fought back in set two, posting a 25-22 win. Hofstra used a 7-1 run midway through the set to turn a 13-12 deficit into a 19-14 lead and then held off a late rally by the Cougars. Lopes da Silva had six kills in the set to lead the Pride while Hannah Klemm dealt out 14 assists. Both teams hit well in the set with Charleston posting a .429 hitting percentage (18-3-35) and Hofstra hitting at a .371 clip (16-3-35). After Charleston had won the opening set without relinquishing the lead, the second set featured nine tie scores and five lead changes.

Hofstra won a hotly-contested third set, battling back from an 18-13 deficit to take a 25-23 win. The Pride would score four consecutive points to pull within one at 18-17. But the Cougars ran off three unanswered points to take a 21-17 lead. The Pride would tie the score at 22 and 23 before closing out the set win with kills from Wills and Lopes da Silva. The Cougars continued their strong hitting, posting a .323 percentage (13-3-31). It was the third consecutive set that Charleston hit over .300. The Pride posted a .244 hitting percentage (19-9-41). Lopes da Silva had six kills in the set once again for the Pride. Cara Howley recorded four kills for the Cougars.

Both teams slowed down hitting wise in the fourth set with the Cougars hitting .176 (14-8-34), but Hofstra was -.024 (8-9-41) as the Cougars forced the fifth set with a 25-18 win. Charleston jumped out to a 10-3 lead before Hofstra rallied to get within two at 18-16. But the Cougars pulled away at the end for the win.

In the fifth set, Sloane White broke a 3-3 tie for the Cougars and Mackenzie Cooler followed with another kill to put Charleston up 5-3 and the Pride could not get closer than one the rest of the way as the Cougars snagged a 15-10 win. The Cougars returned to their strong hitting with a .348 percentage (10-2-23).

In addition to Lopes da Silva, Wills had 15 kills and 18 digs and Emily Burke chipped in with 13 kills. Adama Aja had four kills and six blocks. Klemm led the Pride with 51 assists.

Howley paced the Cougars with 16 kills, while White picked up 15 kills and 14 digs. Morello had 15 kills, 15 digs and six blocks while Andi Zbojniewicz had a match-best 25 digs.

Hofstra will close out the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m., when it hosts William & Mary. The Pride will honor seniors Aja, Lopes da Silva, Burke, Wills and Jordan Clingan prior to the match.
