VB: Seniors Power Pride Past William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - It was only fitting that on Senior Day, Hofstra's upperclassmen would lead the way for the Pride in a 3-0 sweep of William & Mary Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-19, 25-9 and 25-16.

Seniors Emily Burke, Kelsie Wills, Nuria Lopes da Silva and Adama Aja combined for 36 of Hofstra's 45 kills and 13 of 16 block assists. Burke led the way with a match-best 15 kills, while Wills had 10 kills. Lopes da Silva posted nine kills and five blocks, while Aja had two kills and three blocks. Hofstra's underclassmen contributed to the win as well with sophomore setter Hannah Klemm notching 37 assists, sophomore Veronika Kostova added six kills and junior libero Corrina Delgadillo chipped in with a match-high 13 digs.

Hofstra closed out the regular season with a 26-5 record, 13-3 Colonial Athletic Association. William & Mary sees its season end with a 7-24 mark and a 3-13 record in conference play. Hofstra's win gave the team the number two seed in next weekend's CAA Championship. The Pride will receive a bye to the semifinals on Saturday and will face the winner of third-seeded Towson and six-seeded James Madison.

The Pride won the first set, 25-19 behind six kills from Burke and five kills from Wills. Hofstra never trailed in the set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead, but the Tribe rallied and tied the score on four occasions. The Pride broke the last tie, at 14-14, with a 6-0 run that featured two service aces from Lopes da Silva.

Hofstra handily won the second set, 25-9, as the offense clicked on all cylinders. The Pride had 16 kills on 22 attempts with no errors for a .727 hitting percentage. Burke had five more kills for the Pride in the set. Lopes da Silva had four kills and Wills added three in the stanza. Klemm continued to be efficient in the passing game as she had 14 assists for the second consecutive set.

Hofstra was dominant once again in the third set collecting 12 kills and a .290 hitting percentage while holding the Tribe to a -.050 hitting percentage. Though the set featured two lead changes and four tie scores, the outcome was never in doubt as the Tribe's last lead was 4-3. Hofstra would use a 6-1 run to take a 9-5 lead and never let William & Mary get closer than two points the rest of the way.

The Pride offense tallied 45 kills and a .383 hitting percentage in the match as Hofstra committed just nine hitting errors in the three sets. The team also had 44 assists on its 45 kills and added 44 digs and eight total blocks.

The match marked the final appearance at the Mack Physical Education Center for Hofstra five seniors. Wills, Aja, Lopes da Silva, Burke and Jordan Clingan were honored in a prematch ceremony.

Dessi Koleva led William & Mary with six kills and eight digs. Liz Brown and Mallory Brickerd each had five kills for the Tribe.
