MSOC: Hofstra Posts Fourth Straight Shutout In Win Over Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Senior forward Maid Memic scored a 49th-minute goal and the Pride held Wake Forest to just four shots-on-goal to lift Hofstra to a 1-0 victory over the Demon Deacons on Monday night at W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Patric Pray, who was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week earlier in the day, made three saves in logging his third consecutive shutout. Hofstra improved to 6-3-2 overall while Wake Forest dropped to 6-5.

Hofstra posted a fourth consecutive shutout, which is the most in a row since the Pride blanked five straight opponents in 2005. With a 1-0 lead, the Pride made a defensive save on Ian Harkes's 82nd-minute shot. Pray also stopped Tane Gent's shot with 1:11 remaining for his eighth career shutout.

Hofstra was coming off three straight shutout victories with clean sheets against Vermont, Binghamton and Elon in the conference opener. Pray and sophomore goalie Brian McPartland combined on the shutout against the Catamounts and Pray played every minute in the last three games in helping Hofstra extend its scoreless streak to 383:06. Wake Forest is coming off a second-round appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

A scoreless first half featured strong defensive efforts in which both teams generated just a single shot-on-goal apiece. Alec Ferrell and Pray turned each shot away. The score held until Wake Forest committed a foul and Sam Fink was issued a yellow card. That set up Memic, who scored for a second consecutive game. His shot beat Ferrell to give Memic his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Senior Elliott Firth made a bid to give Hofstra an insurance marker with an 81st-minute shot that Ferrell stopped. The Pride's back line, led by senior Daniel Grundei and sophomore Rory Murphy, made a stand against the Wake Forest offense to help protect the one-goal edge.

Hofstra will resume CAA play on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home game versus William & Mary.
