MSOC: Hofstra Opens CAA Play With 2-0 Win Over Elon

Elon, N.C. – Hofstra senior forward Maid Memic scored in the 11th minute and junior goalkeeper Patric Pray made the lead stand up with a seven-save shutout as Hofstra defeated Elon, 2-0, in the opener of Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday night at Rudd Field.

Freshman Danny Elliott scored a key insurance goal in the 54th minute as Hofstra shut out an opponent for a third straight game. Pray logged his second straight shutout (he combined with sophomore Brian McPartland on a clean sheet in Hofstra's 1-0 win over Vermont). The Pride has not allowed a goal in the last 293:06 dating to Sept. 19 at UNH.

Memic scored his third goal of the season and Elliott tallied his first career goal to help Hofstra improve to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Pride mustered just three shots on goal but made it count with the Pride dropping Elon's overall record to 4-4-2 and 0-1.

Hofstra took control early when Memic blasted a shot from 15 yards out that beat Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean, who entered the game with five shutouts this season. Memic, who finished second in the CAA in goals in 2013, scored his first since Sept. 11 at Fairleigh Dickinson. He is tied with fellow senior Daniel Grundei for the team lead in goals and recorded her first game-winning goal of the season.

Elliott had registered his first collegiate point at St. John's on Sept. 4 and scored his first goal in his ninth game. Sophomore Joseph Holland extended his team-leading point total to 11 by picking up his seventh assist on the season in setting up his first-year teammate.

Pray made two saves in the final 10 minutes, stopping Miguel Salazar's 81st-minute shot and stopping Jason Waterman in the 86th minute. Pray now has seven career shutouts.

Holland linked with Elliot on a touch pass, and the Nottingham, England native finished to give Hofstra a 2-0 edge at 53:49.

Hofstra will end a two-game road swing with a rare Monday night game in a non-league title at Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
