VB: Hofstra Uses Huge Rally To Defeat Towson

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore setter Hannah Klemm had an outstanding match with 38 assists, eight blocks and six digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a four-set win over Towson on Friday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Hofstra rallied from a huge deficit in the fourth set as the Pride trailed 20-12 before eventually pulling out the narrow 27-25 victory.

Set scores in total were 28-26, 23-25, 25-23 and the aforementioned 27-25 fourth set finish.

The win improved Hofstra's record to 15-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Hofstra is still in the midst of the second-best start in school history after 17 matches, only eclipsed by the 16-1 start by the 1988 team (finished season 37-5).

The win was Hofstra's sixth straight, matching a six-match win streak from earlier this season.

Towson, which got 14 kills and 11 digs from Haley Pa'akaula, fell to 14-3 and 1-2 in league play with the loss.

Senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills notched a match-high 19 kills and added nine digs for the Pride. Senior middle blocker Nuria Lopes da Silva was tremendous offensively for Hofstra as she had 18 kills and a .517 attack percentage to go along with her five blocks.

The first set was an exciting affair as the two squads fought back and forth with the Pride finally capturing a narrow two-point win in "overtime". Hofstra had an early 11-6 lead in the stanza before Towson battled back to take a 16-14 advantage. The set would go back and forth before the Pride was finally able to put away the set late.

Another close one was in store for the second set with neither squad able to pull away. Towson looked to be in control as they held a 23-19 lead late before Hofstra used a 4-1 run to close to within 24-23. Sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova and Lopes da Silva each had kills during the run to help the Pride rally. Towson would eventually even the match at a set apiece as the Tigers got a kill on set point to get the win.

A kill from freshman outside hitter Brianna Montgomery in the third set would put the Pride ahead, 20-16, and put Hofstra in position to take a lead in the match. The Tigers had other ideas, though, and Towson used a 6-1 run to go ahead 22-21 late in the set. The teams would go back and forth with Towson knotting the score at 23 on a kill from Saitaua Iosia. Hofstra would have the final answer in the stanza as a kill from Wills put the Pride in front before a Tiger attack error ended the set and allowed Hofstra to earn a 2-1 lead in the match.

The match had all the makings of a five-set thriller as Hofstra dug itself a huge hole in the fourth set, trailing 20-12 following a kill from Iosia. The Pride had other ideas, though, as using the strong serving from junior defensive specialist Kaitlyn Krause, Hofstra fought back to even the score at 21 following a 9-1 run. Towson would still have a chance to send the match to a fifth set as they held a set point at 24-22, but Hofstra rallied again and evened the score at 24. After the two teams exchanged points, the Pride got a kill from Wills to get them a match point and a Towson error ended the contest and gave Hofstra the victory.

Krause led Hofstra with 13 digs, while sophomore libero Sophia Black added 11 digs.

Iosia chipped in with 13 kills for the Tigers, while Aimee Schubert and Barbara Lopez each tallied 21 assists.

Hofstra is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Delaware at 1 p.m.
