Hempstead, NY - Northeastern scored a late first half goal, snapping a 2-2 tie, and went on to post a 4-3 win over Hofstra Friday afternoon at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
The win improved the 17th-ranked Huskies record to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra slipped to 7-5 on the year and 0-1 in the CAA.
The Pride opened the scoring just 5:15 into the contest as
Jonel Boileau scored her ninth of the season off a feed from
Carissa Witmer. But the Huskies answered 1:34 later when Kate Carlsson scored off a penalty corner with Natalie Stewart and Emma Lamison notching assists.
The offense would slow down until the Huskies went up 2-1 at the 30:07 mark on an unassisted tally from Lamison following a scramble for a loose ball in front of the Hofstra goal. The lead was short-lived, however, as
Simca Schoen knotted the score at two with her second goal of the season at 31:46.
Stewart scored the goal that put Northeastern ahead for good with 53 seconds left in the opening half. A long shot from outside the circle came across the goal crease and Pride keeper
Carys Swan attempted to play the ball to the left of the goal. But Vanessa Pryor beat her to the ball on the end line and fed Stewart in front of the empty net.
Northeastern would be the benefit of some more good luck early in the second half as once again the Huskies launched a long shot from outside of the circle. Swan watched the ball as it appeared to be heading over the end line, but it hit off the post and careened right to Kelly Dunn in front of the net. Dunn took the rebound and put in her sixth goal of the season at 42:34.
The Pride drew within one as
Claudia Marin Samper collected a rebound and put it past Becky Garner for her ninth goal of the season. However, the Pride would not be able to get the equalizer.
Swan finished with four saves, while Garner made six stops for the Huskies. Marin-Samper took four shots on goal for the Pride. Northeastern held a 12-11 edge in shots while Hofstra posted six penalty corners to the Huskies four.
The Pride returns to action Sunday when they host Columbia in a non-conference matchup. Game time is 1 p.m.
