MSOC: Hofstra Drops 2-0 Decision To UNCW

Wilmington, N.C. – Brayden Smith broke a scoreless tie with a 68th-minute goal and Jamie Dell added an insurance marker 6:26 later as UNCW bested Hofstra, 2-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Saturday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra posted four of its five total shots in the second half but generated just one on-target chance against goalkeeper Sam Williams. The Pride fell to 9-5-2 overall and 4-2 in CAA play. Smith's first goal of the season and Dell's eighth helped the Seahawks team that received votes in the latest NSCAA national poll to 11-3-2 and 4-2-1 against the league.

Junior goalkeeper Patric Pray made three saves for Hofstra. The teams limited offensive chances, with just four combined shots in a scoreless first half. UNCW finally broke ahead at 67:59 when Smith headed in Jacob VanCompernolle's crossing pass near the six-yard box.

Dell then helped secure the win at 74:25 when he took Nathaniel Goodwin' quick pass and capitalized on an open look by scoring to the right-side for the final margin.

Sophomore midfielder Joseph Holland registered three shots for the Pride while freshman forward Danny Elliott recorded the other two.

Sophomore defender Rory Murphy played all 90 minutes for Hofstra, as did Holland, freshman Jon Fraser and senior Daniel Grundei.

Senior forward Maid Memic saw his six-game goal scoring streak come to an end and Hofstra lost for just the first time in three games.

Hofstra has two regular season games remaining, starting with a Wednesday matchup versus Northeastern at 7 p.m.
