Hempstead, NY – Sophomore middle blocker
Veronika Kostova tied her career-high with 17 kills and hit at a .378 clip to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a dominating three-set sweep (25-21, 25-23 and 25-18) of UNCW on Friday evening at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The win was the Pride's 20th of the season as Hofstra moves to a spectacular 20-3 on the year overall and 8-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Hofstra, which has won 11 of its last 12 matches, reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth time since joining the CAA in 2001.
Senior outside hitter
Kelsie Wills was her usual consistent self in the contest as she had her ninth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs.
The Seahawks got 22 assists and six digs from Alyssa Desjardins and eight kills and three blocks from Meredith Peacock.
Hofstra broke a 13-all tie score in the first score with a quick 3-0 run that put the Pride ahead 16-13 midway through the set. The Seahawks closed the gap to two, 22-20, later in the set but a kill from Kostova stemmed the tide and sent Hofstra to the first set victory. Kostova keyed the first stanza for the Pride as she slammed down seven kills.
The Pride would rally in the second stanza as Hofstra trailed UNCW, 22-19, following an attack error by the Pride. Hofstra would need an immediate response with the set hanging in the balance, and the Pride got just that as they closed the set with a 6-1 run to push their lead in the match to two sets to none. Kostova continued her stellar night as she totaled four kills during the set-closing run to catapult the Pride to the second stanza victory.
In the third and final set, the two teams would be knotted at 12 after a kill from Kirsten Powell of UNCW before Hofstra began to take control. The Pride would go on an 8-3 run to lead 20-15 after a pair of kills from Wills. The visitors would be unable to recover from the Pride run as Hofstra would eventually earn a seven-point in in the third stanza as the Seahawks had attack errors on the final three points of the match.
