VB: Hofstra Cruises To Sweep Of Elon

Hempstead, NY – Senior middle blocker Nuria Lopes da Silva had 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills notched a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Elon (25-21, 25-14, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Hofstra picks up its 21st victory of the season as they are now 21-3 overall and 9-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Elon falls to 5-21 and 0-10 in league action.

The double-double was Wills' team-leading 10th of the season.

Despite hitting at just a .190 clip in the opening stanza, Hofstra would still manage to pull out the narrow four-point victory. With the set tied at 15, Hofstra would take the lead for good with three consecutive points, including a kill from junior defensive specialist Kaitlyn Krause, to lead by three. With the Pride still leading by three late, 23-20, kills from senior outside hitter Emily Burke and Lopes da Silva would push Hofstra to the early advantage in the match.

The second set was all Hofstra as the Pride roared out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back in posting the easy victory. Hofstra was especially strong on the defensive side of the ball as they held the Phoenix to zero hitting percentage to take the 2-0 lead in the contest.

In the third set, Elon would battle back and forth with the Pride as the stanza was tied at 12 before Hofstra got a kill from senior middle blocker Adama Aja and a service ace from junior libero Corrina Delgadillo to open up a narrow 14-12 lead. The small advantage would be enough to push the Pride to victory as they would pull away late for the six-point win. Leading 21-19, Hofstra would score the final four points of the set to capture the match. Wills had a pair of kills during the run, while sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova added one of her own.

Ally Karle led Elon with eight kills and also added three blocks. Ana Nicksic and Sydel Curry shared the setting duties and had 15 and 12 assists, respectively.

Delgadillo posted a match-high 12 digs for the Pride, while sophomore setter Hannah Klemm had 30 assists and eight digs.

Hofstra heads back on the road for a pair of CAA matches this week as the Pride will face Delaware on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before closing the week with a Halloween showdown with Towson at 7 p.m.
