MSOC: Hofstra Falls To Delaware In Double Overtime

Newark, Del. – Delaware's Guillermo Delgado scored with 16 seconds left in double overtime as Hofstra fell, 2-1, to the Blue Hens in heavy rain at Grant Stadium in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Wednesday night.

Hofstra senior forward Maid Memic scored a goal for a fourth consecutive game and junior goalkeeper Patric Pray set a career high with nine saves. But Delaware's goal at the 109:44 mark dropped Hofstra to 7-4-2 and 2-1 in CAA play while Delaware improved to 9-4 and 2-1.

Memic, who earned the league Co-Player of the Week award on Monday, continued his hot streak in the 20th minute when he capitalized on sophomore Joseph Holland's pass and bested Delaware goalkeeper Borja Barbero from 15 yards out for the opening score.

Holland extended his CAA-leading assist figure to eight while Memic tallied his sixth goal of the season. Memic entered the game with three consecutive game-winners with scoring strikes against Wake Forest, Elon and William & Mary.  Memic now has 26 career goals, which trails Alan Bodenstein by three for the fifth-most in program history.

The Pride entered the game with five consecutive shutouts, which was the most since the 2005 squad also blanked five straight opponents. Hofstra extended its scoreless streak to 520:53 before Delaware's Kyle Bruno scored the tying goal in the 48th minute. Delgado picked up the assist, sending in a cross that Bruno finished from seven yards out.

That marked the first goal against Pray since Sept. 14 versus Dartmouth. Pray had four consecutive shutouts and teamed with sophomore Brian McPartland on a clean sheet versus Vermont.

But Pray was sharp in giving Hofstra a chance to earn points. The Blue Hens posted a 22-8 shot advantage, including all three of the game's shot after regulation. Pray made six first-half saves to allow the Pride to take the one-goal lead into the break before Bruno's goal just 2:47 into the second half.

Pray's previous career high was seven saves, which was last set in the CAA opener at Elon that resulted in a 2-0 Hofstra win. But Delgado, who was the 2013 CAA Rookie of the Year, netted his league-leading ninth goal by converting Ben Sampon's pass from five yards out by crashing a shot off the post and into the net for the golden goal.

Hofstra is 14-12-1 in the all-time series against Delaware. The Pride will conclude a stretch of four road games in five contests with a Saturday matchup at James Madison. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
