MSOC: Hofstra Falls To Temple In Road Contest

Ambler, Pa. –  Temple scored early in the contest and added a key second-half insurance goal off a header as Hofstra fell, 2-0, to the Owls on Sunday in a non-conference matchup at Ambler Sports Complex.

Vaughn Spurrier gave Temple an edge with an eighth-minute goal and Robert Sagel scored off a free kick in the 65th minute to help Temple improve to 2-0. Senior Chris Griebsch led Hofstra with five shots, though the Pride lost for the first time this season in falling to 1-1-1.

Temple goalkeeper Dan Scheck made four saves for the clean sheet. Hofstra made a comeback bid, notching three of its four shots-on-goal after halftime, though Scheck turned all attempts away for the shutout.

Spurrier's first goal of the season put the Owls on the scoreboard at 7:58. Spurrier, who finished with five shots, took Stefan Muller's feed and found the net for the game's only goal of the opening half.

Sagel ensured the Owls maintained the lead when he headed in Jared Martinelli's corner kick at 64:08. It was Sagel's first goal of 2013.

Hofstra senior goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini made three saves in 65:40. Sophomore Patric Pray made his Hofstra debut, totaling one save in 24:20 of game action.

Hofstra freshman Kyle Poetzsch logged a season-high three shots in the start. The only other Pride players besides Poetzsch and Griebsch to record multiple shots was fellow freshman Reece Alexander and senior defender Tyler Botte, who each had two.

After tying Saint Joseph's, 3-3, on Friday night, Hofstra is 0-1-1 through the first two legs of a three-game road swing.  The matchup against Temple was the first between the schools since 2010.

The Pride will next be in action on Wednesday with a non-league road game at Boston University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
