MSOC: Hofstra's Comeback Bid Falls Short To BU

Boston, MA – Hofstra junior Elliott Firth scored his first collegiate goal but Boston University scored twice in the first half as the Pride lost, 2-1, to the Terriers in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.

Dominique Badji and Mac McGuire scored almost nine minutes apart to lift BU to its first win of the season at 1-2. Hofstra lost its second straight in dropping to 1-2-1.

Firth, who did not see any game action in 2012, scored for the first time in his career on a seventh-minute. The Terriers failed to clear the ball and Firth took advantage by sending a shot inside the left post from approximately eight yards out to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead.

A penalty-kick goal tied the score at 1 in the 30th minute. Hofstra was whistled for a foul in the box for the second time in three games and Badji converted the chance for his first goal of the season at 29:04. McGuire followed with his first goal of the season on Anthony Ciccone's cross. McGuire's shot tucked inside the right post in the 39th minute for what proved to be the game winner.

Hofstra fell to 4-5-1 in the all-time series against BU and lost for the first time in four meetings. The series dates to 1995 when both schools were members of the North Atlantic Conference and later faced off in the America East.

The Pride made a late push in building a 13-2 edge in second-half shots. BU goalkeeper Nick Thomson made four of his six total saves after halftime. Hofstra fired six shots in the last 11 minutes, including two by freshman Kyle Poetzsch. Thompson stopped his second attempt, thwarting the only on-target Hofstra shot during that stretch.

Senior goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini made a season-high five saves to keep Hofstra in the game. All of those stops came in the opening half.

Hofstra will next be in action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against Brown.
