4/7/2013 8:20:00 PM

Williamsburg, VA – The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal deficit in the second half to send the game to overtime, but the Pride was unable to complete the rally as they dropped a 12-11 overtime decision to William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.

The loss drops Hofstra's overall record to 7-5 this season and evens their Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) mark at 1-1. William & Mary improves to 4-8 and 1-2 in league play with the victory.

Kyrstin Mackrides would score the game winning goal with 3:02 left in overtime to give the Tribe the 12-11 win.

Hofstra had a pair of players with hat tricks in the game as sophomore attack Brittain Altomare had three goals and an assist to lead the way, while junior attack Julia Riemer added three goals.

Freshman attack/midfielder Becky Conto continued her stellar week as she had a game-high seven draw controls and added a pair of goals. The seven draw controls came one game after Conto set a Hofstra individual season-high with nine draw controls at Old Dominion on Friday.

Hofstra got on the scoreboard first in the game and would be tied at two with 23:12 showing on the clock after senior midfielder Casey Kellogg scored an unassisted tally. Altomare had opened the scoring at the 27:53 mark before two straight William & Mary goals gave the Tribe an early 2-1 advantage.

William & Mary would dominate the remainder of the first half as they opened up as much as a five-goal advantage at 7-2 with 14:27 left before halftime.

Both teams would go scoreless over the next eight-plus minutes until Conto ended a 5-0 William & Mary run with an unassisted goal at the 6:01 mark. Conto would cut the deficit to three goals at the break as she scored a free-position goal with 1:51 remaining to make it 7-3 in favor of the Tribe.

William & Mary kept the pressure on to start the second stanza as Mackrides pushed the lead back to four goals, 8-4, with 27:09 left in regulation before Hofstra began to mount its rally.

Hofstra would score three goals in a 4:08 span as Riemer, sophomore defender April Iannetta and senior attack Claire Brady each scored to close the gap to 8-7 with 14:17 remaining.

The Pride would finally knot the score as back-to-back goals from Riemer made it 10-all with less than three minutes left. The second of her two goals came at the 2:44 mark and completed Hofstra's comeback from the five-goal first half deficit and the four-goal second half deficit.

A goal from Ellen Shaffrey with 1:33 to play would give William & Mary what looked to be an 11-10 win, but Altomare had other ideas. The talented second-year player knotted the score once more and her free-position goal with 39 ticks on the clock would send the game into overtime tied at 11.

There would be only one goal scored in the six-minute overtime as Mackrides gave the Tribe the win.

Sophomore goalie Kelsey Gregerson had eight saves and a team-high six ground balls for Hofstra, while Iannetta had five ground balls and two draw controls in addition to her goal.

Freshman defender Shelby Milne led the Pride with four caused turnovers, while Gregerson added three.

Mackrides finished with a game-high five goals, while Shaffrey had three goals for William & Mary. Colleen Nofi made 11 saves in net for the Tribe.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday, April 12 when it hosts James Madison at 4 p.m.
