WTEN: Hofstra Falls To No. 15 NYIT

Hempstead, NY - Paige Polizois was Hofstra's lone winner, posting a singles victory at the fifth flight, as the Pride lost a 6-1 decision to the New York Institute of Technology Thursday afternoon at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center.

The Pride fall to 2-4 with the loss. NYIT, which is ranked 15th in the nation in Division II, improves to 20-3. 

Hofstra, which had just five healthy players, dropped the two contested doubles matches as Nelly Ciolkowski and Madalina Florea defeated Sarah Bowen and Malissa Gilanchi at first doubles, 8-6. Rocio Benavent and Sara Burinato then picked up an 8-5 win over Sonia Tsay and Bianca Derrick to pick up the doubles point.

In singles action, Ciolkowski defeated Tsay at first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Bowen and Burinato had a close match at second singles with Burinato coming out on top, 6-5, 7-5. Florea defeated Gilanchi at third singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Benavent defeated Derrick, 6-0, 6-0, at fourth singles.

Polizois, who usually plays at sixth singles, stepped up a flight in place of the injured Louise Lopez and tallied a 6-4, 6-1 win over Valeria Savina.

Hofstra is back in action Monday, April 1, when it travels to Marist for a 3 p.m. match.
