WREST: All Three Pride Wrestlers Advance At NCAA Championships

Des Moines, IA – All three Hofstra wrestlers advanced to day two of the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Friday at the Wells Fargo Arena.Day two of competition begins at 11 a.m. (ET).

125-lb senior Steve Bonanno (Wantagh, NY), 133-lb junior Jamie Franco (Monroe, NY) and 141-lb junior Luke Vaith (Hastings, MN) each recorded 1-1 marks in their respective weight classes to advance to Friday's consolation rounds.

Friday morning's session three competition, including quarterfinal action, can be viewed on ESPNU as well as ESPN3.com beginning at 11 a.m. Friday night's session four semifinals and wrestlebacks will be aired on ESPNU.

Bonanno, who placed eighth to earn All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, began his fourth NCAA Tournament with a 9-2 victory over 10th-seed Josh Martinez (27-11) from the Air Force Academy to advance to the round of 16 at 125 pounds. Bonanno, who won for the 11th time in his last 14 matches, then squared off against a second top 10 seed in seventh-seed Nathan Kraisser from North Carolina in the second round. In a close battle, Kraisser (34-5) defeated Bonanno, 5-3, sending the two-time CAA champion to Friday's consolations. Bonanno (18-11) will face the Cal State Bakersfield senior Tyler Iwamura (24-9) in the second round of the consolations Friday morning. The two wrestlers met in the first round of last year's Championships with Bonanno posting a 6-3 victory.

Franco, who is making his second NCAA Championship appearance this year, was nipped by Pittsburgh's Shelton Mack (18-9) in his 133-pound first round match Thursday morning. But the CAA champion rallied to tie his consolation match with Duke's Brandon Gambucci and then recorded a takedown 26 seconds into sudden victory for a 6-4 win that advances Franco (19-14) to Friday's consolation second round.  He will face North Carolina freshman Joseph Ward (20-11) Friday morning. It will be their first meeting.

Vaith, who is also making his second NCAA Championship appearance this year, began his national tournament on the right foot posting an 8-3 victory over West Virginia junior Nathan Pennesi. But Hofstra's 2012 CAA champion, who qualified for this year's championship by placing third at 141 pounds, squared off against fourth-seed sophomore Mitchell Port from Edinboro in the second round of the championship round. Port recorded a 13-2 major decision over Vaith (22-13) sending the Minnesota native to the second round of the consolations on Friday. He will face Missouri senior Nicholas Hucke (15-15) Friday morning.
