Hempstead, NY - Stevie Mejia continued his
strong play with 13 points and Moussa Kone added 11 points but it was not
enough as Towson posted a 57-50 victory over the Pride Saturday evening at the
Mack Sports Complex.
Hofstra falls to 6-20, 3-10 in the Colonial Athletic
Association with the loss, while Towson improves to 15-13, 10-5 in the CAA.
After Hofstra scored the first basket of the game, Towson
went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead 2:51 into the contest. The Tigers would
build the lead to 10, 14-4, with 12:28 remaining on a jumper from Timajh
Parker-Rivera.
The Pride would then start a 13-6 run, keyed by a Mejia
three-pointer to pull within three, 20-17 with 3:52 to go on a Kone jumper.
Neither team would score until a Parker-Rivera free throw with 35 seconds
remaining put the Tigers up four, 21-17. But the Pride drew within two points
at the break thanks to a great pass from David Imes, who found an unguarded Kone
under the basket for a thunderous dunk with five seconds on the clock. Towson
had a shot at the buzzer, but missed the initial attempt and the follow-up was
ruled to have come after the buzzer resulting in a 21-19 halftime score.
The Pride opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a
29-23 lead with 16:59 to play on a Stephen Nwaukoni jumper in the paint. Towson
would respond with four straight points to get back within two at 29-27 on a
pair of free throws from Jerrelle Benimon. Kone put the Pride back up by four,
but Towson went on another run, this one 10-0 to take the lead back 37-31 with
12:11 to play on a Mike Burwell three-pointer.
Towson would extend its lead to 10, 44-34, with 8:01 to play
on a Parker-Rivera layup. The lead went up to 11, 46-35, before Hofstra scored
four consecutive points to get back within seven, 46-39, on a Jordan Allen layup
with 5:39 to go. But the Pride would not get closer than five the rest of the
way.
In addition to Mejia and Kone, Allen had nine points and
Imes added eight points and six rebounds. Mejia also had a career-high seven steals
as Hofstra picked up a season-best 15 in the game. The seven steals by Mejia,
which is one off the school record, was the second time this week that a
Hofstra player threatened the mark as Allen posted seven at UNCW on February 9.
Benimon led Towson with 17 points, while Marcus Damas added
11 points and eight rebounds.
Hofstra is back in action Monday night at Drexel in a game
televised on the NBC Sports Network. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
