Queens, NY -Hofstra and Long Island University split six singles matches, but the Blackbirds claimed the doubles point to post a 4-3 win over the Pride Friday afternoon at Queens College. The match marked the debut of new Hofstra Director of Tennis Lauren Leo.
Hofstra drops to 0-1 on the season, while LIU improves to 1-0.
Malissa Gilanchi, Louise Lopez and Paige Polizois each won their respective singles matches. Gilanchi posted a 6-3, 7-6 (10-5) win over Katya Yegoreychenko at third singles, while Lopez posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lisa Maas at fourth singles. Polizois provided the Pride their final victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brittany Thompson at sixth singles.
Sonia Tsay (first singles), Sarah Bowen (second singles) and Bianca Derrick (fifth singles) each suffered losses, with Bowen dropping a three-setter to Sanne Louwers.
Long Island won all three doubles matches, including Maas and Thompson posting a 9-7 win over Derrick and Polizois.
Hofstra is back in action next Saturday, February 23 against Bucknell. The match will take place in Quakerstown, PA.
