Blacksburg, VA – Jamel Hudson, Nick Terdick and Joe Booth each won their matches, but 17th-ranked Virginia Tech picked up wins in the other seven en route to a 28-9 win over the Pride at Cassell Coliseum Friday night.
The match started at 184 pounds with the Hokies Nick Vetterlein notching a major decision over Dwight Howes, 14-6. Chris Penny followed with a pinfall victory over the Pride's David Heitman at 197. Ty Walz pushed the Tech lead to 13-0 with a 6-4 win in sudden victory over Michael Hughes at 285 pounds. Joey Dance edged Jamie Franco, 3-1, at 125 pounds before Hudson put the Pride on the board with a 9-5 decision over Erik Spjut at 133 pounds.
Virginia Tech's third-ranked Devin Carter pinned Luke Vaith at 141 pounds to push the Hokie lead to 22-3. Zach Neibert, who is ranked seventh, picked up a 13-9 win over Cody Ruggirello at 149 pounds to make it 25-3 in favor of the Hokies.
Hofstra then won the next two bouts as Terdick won by decision over Sal Mastriani, 10-6, at 157 pounds and Booth earned a 5-3 win over Chris Moon at 165 pounds. Those wins made the score 25-9 before Austin Gabel closed out the match with a 5-1 decision over Victor Pozsonyi at 174 pounds.
The Pride is back in action on Sunday at the Hokie Duals in Salem, Virginia. Hofstra will face Chattanooga (9 a.m.), VMI (11 a.m.) and North Carolina (1 p.m.).
