Wilmington, N.C. - Michael Recchia scored off his own
rebound with three seconds left in the second half to cap a wild finish as
Hofstra fell to UNC Wilmington, 3-2, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Saturday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
A whirlwind ending featured three goals in the final
eight minutes. UNC Wilmington scored at 82:03 to take a 2-1 lead before junior
Shaun Foster flicked in a low free kick to tie the score at 2 with 3:05
remaining in regulation.
Foster's (Southport, England) second goal of the season for the Pride seemed
like it would send the contest into overtime. But Recchia's second-chance goal
lifted UNC Wilmington to 4-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in CAA play. Hofstra dropped
to 6-3-1 and 0-2-0 against the conference.
Both of Hofstra's goals came in the second half. Junior Chris Griebsch scored in the 69th minute knot the game at 1. Griebsch, who played as
reserve for the second straight game in coming off an injury, erased a 1-0 deficit
at 68:55 by scoring off a free kick.
Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) blasted a shot 23 yards out on the right side off
the set piece to tie the game. His fourth goal of the season tied
sophomore Maid Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) for the team lead.
UNCW quickly regained momentum in what proved to be the
first of two dramatic goals for the squad. Nathaniel Goodwin scored off a
volley in the 83rd minute for UNC Wilmington to give the Seahawks a 2-1 edge
before Foster's late heroics. Goodwin served Ettiene Boulanger's right-flank
pass from 35 yards out into the Hofstra net with 7:57 remaining.
Foster, a defender, played up as Hofstra worked furiously
to tie the game. He scored his second goal of the season with freshman Joseph Holland (London, England) picking up the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski (Coram, N.Y.) made four
saves for Hofstra, including Recchia's initial shot. Counterpart Sam Williams posted
three stops for the Seahawks. Hofstra is now 7-3-2 in the all-time series.
UNCW registered the first six shots of the game, including
the opening scoring strike at 15:25 when Jacob VanCompernolle headed in Michael
Parrish's long pass from midfield from the top of the penalty area.
Holland nearly got the equalizer three minutes later,
hitting the crossbar on the Pride's first shot of the contest. Holland finished
with two shots while Griebsch tallied a team-high three shots.
Hofstra will next be in action on Wednesday when the
Pride opposes George Mason on the road. Game time in Fairfax, Va. is set for 7
p.m.
(Editor's Note: Tyler Botte was credited with Hofstra's second goal instead of Shaun Foster. The change was made on Oct. 2. The attached box score reflects the change).
