Fairfax, Va. -- Junior Chris Grenzig scored his first career
goal and Hofstra's defense limited George Mason to three shots on net as the
Pride defeated the Patriots, 3-1, on Wednesday night in a Colonial Athletic
Association matchup.
Freshman Joseph Holland scored Hofstra's first goal and sophomore
Maid Memic tallied a key insurance marker in the second half to help Hofstra improve to 7-3-1 overall and 1-2 in
conference play. Mason fell to 7-3 and 1-2.
Junior Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau) had two assists, marking the second time this season he had two assists in a game (the first was on Sept. 7 at Binghamton).
Hofstra surged to a three-goal lead in the second half
before Taylor Morgan scored in the 59th minute to cut the Pride's lead to 3-1. But
the Pride's defense, led by juniors Shaun Foster (Southport, England), Tyler
Botte (North Babylon, N.Y.) and seniors A.J. Laza (Coram, N.Y.) and Thomas Bekas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) surrendered just one shot on net the rest of the way.
Holland opened the scoring in the 27th minute, notching his
fifth goal by converting a breakaway chance. The midfielder from London,
England recorded the unassisted goal when he race in and chipped the ball over
Mason goalkeeper Dustin Butcher for a 1-0 lead.
Grenzig (Nesconset, N.Y.) gave Hofstra 2-0 cushion right
before halftime, scoring his first collegiate goal in his 25th game. The third-year member of the Pride, who
entered the contest with one career point, generated a turnover with a good
tackle before kicking the ball to the left side of the net in the 38th minute.
Mason replaced Butcher with Sean Cote in net to start the second
half, though the Pride was able to score again when Memic went for goal from
outside the box at 57:27. Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) tied Holland with the
team-lead in goals with five. Foster was credited with the assist on the play.
But the Patriots answered right back when Morgan scored just
44 seconds later. Morgan compiled his seventh goal of the season when he headed
in Timmy Mulgrew's pass. That would be the only goal senior goalkeeper Adam
Janowski (Coram, N.Y.) allowed for Hofstra. Janowski finished with two saves in
improving to 4-2.
The Pride will host Georgia State in a CAA contest on
Saturday at 1 p.m. from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
