Newark, Del. - Junior
Olivia Galati struck out 13 in a complete-game one-hitter to lift Hofstra to a
3-0 victory in the first game and senior outfielder Rachael Senatore registered
three total RBIs (two in the last contest) as part of a 9-2 win in Game 2 to help the Pride sweep
Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday
afternoon at UD Softball Stadium.
Hofstra stayed undefeated in CAA play, extending its winning
streak to 13 games while improving to 17-12 and 7-0 against the league.
Delaware dropped to 8-31-1 and 2-6. The Pride is now 53-16 all-time against the
Blue Hens and has 16 consecutive wins in the series dating to 2006.
Senior pitcher Erin Wade took advantage early run support in
the second game, scattering seven hits, two runs (one earned) in six innings to improve to
5-7. Wade registered her fourth straight victory.
In the second game, Senatore lined a two-run single up the
middle to score senior catcher Courtney Crews and sophomore second baseman Tori
Rocha to open a 3-0 lead. The Pride opened the scoring in the first inning off
a Delaware throwing error. Senatore, who finished 4-for-5 from the leadoff
spot, started the game with a single and scored one batter later on Michelle
McKinnon's error.
Crews' RBI triple to right brought home freshman Erin Trippi
in the third and junior shortstop Becca Bigler delivered a run-scoring single
to left to score Rocha, extending Hofstra's lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
Galati pulled a RBI double that bounced off the leftfield
wall and junior outfielder Tessa Ziemba
hit a two-run triple to extend the lead to 8-0 in the sixth. Crews' RBI single to left capped Hofstra's scoring.
A pitcher's duel in the opener between Galati and Delaware's Chenxi Jiao resulted
in a scoreless tie until the top of the seventh when Hofstra plated three runs.
Senatore's sacrifice fly drove in fellow senior Michelle
Lavagnino in the top of to start the inning and the Pride capitalized on
back-to-back Delaware errors for two unearned runs, setting up Hofstra's 12th
consecutive victory.
Galati (12-5) won her 10th consecutive start by tossing her
fourth complete game in her last five starts. Only four Delaware batters
reached base safely. Andrews was hit by a pitch twice while Marissa Newman's
third-inning double was the only hit. The Blue Hens got a seventh-inning base
runner on a Hofstra fielding error before Galati struck out Morgan Culver for
the third time in the game to secure the win while lowering ERA to a
CAA-leading 1.55.
Jiao (2-16) scattered eight hits through the first six
innings before Lavagnino ripped a leadoff triple into the right-center gap, beating
the relay throw in with a hard head-first slide. Senatore then shortened her
swing and lofted a fly ball to medium-deep center field, knocking it deep
enough for Lavagnino to race home ahead of Laura Andrews' one-hop throw to the plate.
Two Delaware defensive miscues helped Hofstra score key insurance
runs. Galati worked a two-out walk and Ziemba brought her home on a three-base
error as leftfielder Gina Knuston misplayed her fly ball off her glove. A
fielding error on the next play by third baseman brought in the third run.
Galati struck out two batters to close the game in the
bottom of the inning. She struck out at least two batters in every inning
except the sixth, during which Delaware was retired 1-2-3 on two fly outs and a
ground out.
Hofstra, which entered with 13 first-inning runs scored in
the last three games, threatened to do further damage in the opener. Bigler and Galati lined back-to-back base
hits, though Jiao struck out the side to end the threat.
The Pride loaded the
bases in the second. Crews led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and
back-to-back two-out singles loaded the bases for Bigler. Jiao again escaped
trouble by getting Bigler to fly out to left.
Hofstra almost broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when
Bigler lined a leadoff single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
With the wind blowing in, Ziemba launched a long fly ball to center. The ball
appeared to carry before coming down on the warning track in centerfielder Lara
Andrews' glove. Delaware then ended the inning with the double play when the
umpires ruled Bigler left early in attempting to tag up and advance to third.
But Galati struck out two batters in every inning from the
third-through-fifth innings, giving the Pride's offense a chance to win it in
the seventh.
The series also represented a homecoming for freshman
Lindsey Reid, who is from nearby Bear, Del. and Ziemba, who is from Wilmington,
Del.
Hofstra will conclude its three-game series with Delaware on
Sunday with a noon start.
