Hempstead, N.Y. - Senior third baseman Krista Thorn hit a
grand slam and drove in six runs total in two games while junior Olivia Galati
and senior Erin Wade each registered complete-game victories to lift Hofstra to
a doubleheader sweep, 6-0 and 11-3, against Central Connecticut State in
non-conference matchups Tuesday at Hofstra Softball Stadium.
Thorn finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored combined in
helping to extend Hofstra's winning streak to 16 games. The Pride (20-12) has
out-scored opponents, 38-5, in the last five games. CCSU dropped to 20-13.
Before the game, Galati was named the national Division I
Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Galati then
showed the skills that earned her the prestigious award, tossing a two-hit
shutout in the opener to win her 12th consecutive start. Galati improved to
14-5, striking out 10 against just one walk.
In the second game, Hofstra erased a 3-2 deficit, scoring
five times in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on a run rule for the sixth time this season. Nursing a 6-3 edge,
Thorn registered her fourth hit of the day with a leadoff single up the middle.
Pinch-hitter D.J. Slugh came off the bench to hit a RBI double while junior
Tessa Ziemba and freshman Erin Trippi also logged RBIs. Senior Courtney Crews'
run-scoring single to right plated the 11th run and ended the game
thanks to establishing an eight-run lead.
Thorn had a key hit earlier in the contest, singling home
the first run in the second. Freshman Lindsey Reid then notched her first
collegiate RBI, hitting a sacrifice fly to right to put the Pride up, 2-0.
CCSU scored three runs in the third against Wade. But the
veteran right-hander ended the game with three scoreless innings, retiring the
final nine batters she faced to improve to 6-7. Wade struck out five and
allowed three hits en route to her fifth straight win.
Hofstra stormed back with three runs in the fourth. Crews and Thorn started the inning with
back-to-back hits off Blue Devils starter Julie Marks (2-4). Thorn drove in Crews and senior Rachael
Senatore brought home the second run on a single to center. A three-base error
by CCSU center fielder Rebecca Mussatti allowed Senatore to race all the way
around the base paths.
In the opener, Thorn staked Galati to an early lead with a
grand slam as part of Hofstra's five-run first inning. After Galati struck out the side in order to
start the contest , two singles sandwiched around a hit batter loaded the bases
with one out. CCSU starter Jordan Tingley (3-3) appeared to almost escape
trouble by inducing a force out to home.
But Crews continued her season-long trend of taking one for
the team, getting hit with a pitch for the 15th time this season to
force in a run. Thorn then pulled a home run with the bases loaded over the
wall in left for her third home run in seven games. The Pride added an
insurance run in the third to cap the scoring, providing more than enough
support as Galati allowed just three base runners (only one of whom advanced
past first).
Hofstra will next be in action on Wednesday with another
non-conference doubleheader. The Pride will host Lehigh with a 3:30 p.m. start
at Hofstra Softball Stadium.
