WREST: Pride Fall To Penn and Drexel

Philadelphia, PA - Senior Paul Snyder, junior Jamie Franco and sophomore Jermaine John each posted two victories in two matches but the Hofstra Pride dropped two matches in Philadelphia Sunday, falling to Penn, 21-12 at the Palestra, and Drexel, 22-16 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

In the first match against Penn at the Palestra, the two teams split the first four weight classes for a 6-6 tie heading into 157 pounds. Penn's Mark Rappo, ranked 20th by InterMat, opened the match at 125 pounds by edging Pride senior Steve Bonanno, ranked 17th, 9-7 in sudden victory. But the Pride won the next two matches to take a 6-3 lead as junior Jamie Franco topped Geoffrey Bostany, 6-1 at 133 pounds and classmate Luke Vaith, ranked 10th, edged C.J. Cobb, 5-4.


Penn's Andrew Lenzi started a run of three consecutive wins for the Quakers with a 7-6 decision over Pride senior Matt Spataro at 149 pounds to tie the contest at 6-6. Tory Hernandez then posted a 19-4 tech fall win over freshman Jay Lysne at 157 and Casey Kent notched a 12-2 major decision over sophomore Nick Terdick at 165 to open up a 15-6 advantage.


Hofstra sophomore Jermaine John stopped the Quakers' run with a 7-1 victory over Ian Korb at 174 to close the deficit to 15-9. But Canaan Bethea topped senior Taras Luzhnyy, 4-2 at 184 and Harrison Cook blanked Victor Pozsonyi (0-3), 6-0 at 197 to boost the Penn lead to 21-9. Pride senior Paul Snyder closed out the match with a 3-2 victory over Steven Graziano at 285 pounds.


Moving just a couple of streets away, the Pride opened their 2012-13 Colonial Athletic Association season at Drexel University late Sunday afternoon. Hofstra came out with three wins in the first four matches to take a 9-3 advantage. Bonanno topped Jake Goodwin at 125 pounds to boost his season slate to 7-5. Franco then blanked Clayton Lutow, 5-0 at 133 to even his record to 7-7. Drexel's Frank Cimato upset Pride junior Luke Vaith (9-5), ranked 10th, 10-7 at 141. But Pride senior Matt Spataro (9-10) defeated Shane Fenningham,5-1 at 149.


But the Dragons recorded two six-point wins in the next two matches to take the lead they would not relinquish as Austin Sommer pinned Jay Lysne (5-11) at the 3:57 mark at 157 to tie the match and Charles Aungst won by injury default over Nick Terdick (4-10) at 165 for a 15-9 lead.


Jermaine John (8-6), once again stopped a run, posting a 13-5 major decision over Kevin Matyas at 174 to close the Hofstra deficit to 15-12. But the Dragons won the next two as Bryan Sternlieb defeated Taras Luzhnyy (1-11), 7-5 at 184 and Brandon Palik recorded a 13-1 major decision over Tim Murphy (2-8) at 197 for a 22-13 advantage. Paul Snyder, who won all three of his matches this weekend to improve to 10-3 on the season, closed out the match with an 11-5 win over Jon Max Wright at 285 pounds.


The Pride fall to 0-9, 0-1 on the season while Drexel, which defeated the Pride for the first time since 1997, improved to 3-4, 1-0 on the season. Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, December 16 when they face fourth-ranked Iowa at 10:30 a.m. and fifth-ranked Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. in the Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden.
