Hempstead, N.Y. - Hofstra will try to sustain its
successful run at home when the Pride hosts George Mason on Friday at 7 p.m.
from Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride will then play in another Colonial
Athletic Association matchup with a 1 p.m. contest against Towson on Sunday at
James M. Shuart Stadium.
After splitting two league games last week, Hofstra (8-5,
4-1 CAA) will take on a George Mason squad that is 5-8-1 overall and 1-3-1
against the league. Mason has lost three of the last four with all the defeats
coming by a single goal and two of the losses coming in overtime.
The Pride is off to a 5-0 start at
home this season, out-scoring opponents, 14-2, in the process. Head coach Simon
Riddiough's team posted a come-from-behind home win against Delaware last week
before the Pride lost at Drexel for their first league loss of the season.
Mason dropped a 1-0 decision to William and Mary, losing at home against the first-place
Tribe. Mason fell to James Madison, 1-0, in double overtime in the previous
game.
Last season, Hofstra dropped a 1-0 decision on the road
to Mason. The Pride is 7-3-1 in the all-time series. This year, senior forward Tiana Kallenberger has initiated Mason's
success on the offensive end. Kallenberger is third in the league with 19
points and second in goals with eight, which is just one behind the league
leader.
Sophomore forward Liz Hodges
has provided the complementary offense with five goals. But Mason's defense has
struggled at times in the second half with the Patriots surrendering 15 of
their 23 goals-allowed after halftime.
Hofstra
will look to put pressure on the Mason defense and continue a season-long trend
of generating scoring chances. The Pride is averaging 15.6 shots-per-game
compared to 9.6 attempts per game for the opposition in out-shooting teams,
203-125.
Freshman Leah Galton (Harrogate, England) has two multi-goal games in her last
four contests, including a two-goal output to help Hofstra beat the Blue Hens.
Galton leads Hofstra with seven goals and 17 points. Right below her on the
team's scoring leaderboard is fellow freshman Jill Mulholland (Levittown, N.Y.)
who has points in six her of last seven games and is second on the squad in goals
(six) and points (15). Galton and Mulholland are 5-6 in the CAA in points.
Hofstra has enjoyed
historical success in the all-time meeting, going 14-2-1 against the Tigers.
Hofstra has won nine of the last 10 games in the matchup. Last season, the
Tigers snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series with a 3-2 home win. The
only opponent Hofstra has more victories against is Drexel and Delaware (15
against each).
Towson has lost eight of the last nine games, though the Tigers are coming of a
close 1-0 defeat to James Madison. Towson has been out-scored, 34-8. The Tigers
will look to revive an offense that is scoring 0.62 goals per game.
Hofstra's defense will look to extend Towson's struggles in the attacking end. Senior
defender Brooke Bendernagel, a preseason All-CAA team member, has started 10
of her 12 games this season, tallying two shots in the process. Hofstra is
out-scoring opponents, 25-18, in games in which Bendernagel (Smithtown, N.Y.)
has played.
The game will be
played at Shuart Stadium across Hempstead Turnpike from the team's regular
home.
Since joining the CAA in 2002, Hofstra has compiled an impressive 75-26-8
record in league games. Dating back to its days as a member of the America East
Conference, Hofstra has finished fourth or higher in its conference standings
in 10 of the last 12 years.
